Exhaust, dB and the police...

Postby Z1000 » Thu Nov 04, 2004 6:20 pm

Hi all,

Just wondering who here has had any problems with exhaust noise and the Police. Mainly looking for QLD people to speak up as that's where I am but others can join in.

The purpose of this is that I now have a Micron system on my bike and just thinking how I will fair with the boys in blue under normal riding conditions etc. Nothing crazy. Of course if you being a complete idiot you will attract their attention, I guess :?

Ive never been hassled by the police because of my exhaust, I have a Muzzy. Im in Tassie though.
I was told by a guy I know that rides a GSXR1000 (A VERY neat one) who used to work as a vehicle tester that the device that police use to test vehicles exhaust noize level is useless and will almost always give a reading above the legal limit.
Its is supposed to be used inside a resonant ampitheatre (spelling?) at a certain distance and not just on the road side.
I dont know how much truth there is in this but the guy is usually a very reliable info source.
"The road to hell is paved with good intentions" screw it then i'll just be bad.

I have never been pulled over for a noise test. My boss has though twice, He had a laser pipe on his 97 YZF600 and it was pretty loud.

He is certainly no hoon either, his excuse was he bought the bike like that and I think it had a dodgy plate with the allowable noise limits.

Thats the only case I know of, sorry could not be of more assistance.

My pipemasters pipes are pretty loud and the coppers didn't say a peep about them when he pulled me over for a licence check on the ZZR, he did think it was a 600 though, snort. I havent heard about anyone having problems with the boys in blue and I know a lot of guys with loud aftermarket or altered stock exhausts.

Thankfully the laws in Qld aren't as ridiculous as in NSW, where the noise has to match the sticker and has to be under a certain limit. As long as we're within the limit, I am pretty sure we're fine.

The whole NSW thing is a classic case of a stupid rule being over enthusiastically enforced to increase state revenue, thereby justifying a small number of people having cushy government jobs..."You can't downsize this department - look at the revenues we've generated..." etc. Think it doesn't happen? Wrong!!!

What should really happen in NSW is that the rule should be re-written to make sense and to make compliance easier.

Well unless its louder than some these harleys gettin around, i dont think youll have any problems. I get drowned out on mine by cars mostly. All these little turbo things with the big exuast systems. Thats the good thing on the goldcoast though. All these cars are bringing so much attention to themselvies, the cops are leaving every1 else alone.
