Bike service

Postby mrmina » Mon Oct 18, 2004 1:51 pm

hey all,

just remembered that i did my 30,000k (done at @ 29,164kms) service 6 months ago. the bike has currently done 30,909kms.

its only a 1745kms (it is winter). in the service manual it recommends an oil change every 6 month or 6,000kms which ever come first.

is this really essential even during winter when the bike is not being used often.

can i wait until the next service at 36,000kms?
will it cause any damage, if the oil is not changed every 6 months?

what do u people think?

It will affect your warranty( If it is still under ) as I beleive it is ever 6000k's or 6 months

If it isnt it would probably be good to change the oil( as it could have lost some of its protective quality's ) and more than likely you will be giving the bike a good working over summer and it'll keep ya gearbox when ya tearin round the mountains.

My 2 cents and must remind you I have not a mech bone in my body.

Oil deteriorates with age. I wouldn't be a cheapskate with it - oil is relatively cheap, and there may not even be a need to change the filter with it (although I probably would). Bad oil does more damage to an engine than just about anything else you can do to it.

remember reading somewhere that oil goes acidic or alkaline with age and can do serious damage if left unchecked.........coulda just been bull from one of the oil companies but I daren't risk it

As a minimum change the oil. The oil filter *should* be ok.
If you check your manual, it may even suggest that the oil filter is changed every 2nd service.

Hey mina, that means you'd have to change your oil before each ride!! seeing you only ride it once every 6 months!!
