Advice on frame sliders ...

Postby Lt-Dan » Thu Mar 14, 2013 4:27 pm

Hi guys,

I've been contemplating whether or not I should invest in some frame sliders for my '04 zx10r trackie. I've heard mixed reports about them, but was just wondering what you guys think?

Cheers,
Dan

My vote is in favour of them! More often than not they should reduce the severity of the crash damage.

Yeah me to.

Listen on a low side they save a lot of damage but so do good rearsets with SOLID pegs and swing arm pick ups.

And if you can wedge yourself between your bike and the ground, or another bike, or the wall, that will help save damage also

Yeah, I hear you guys and certainly agree that they are advantageous in low sides. I suppose nothing can really save $$$ in a high side/speed crash except for a bottomless wallet.

Do many of our KSRC members who race use them?

I have Woodcraft frame sliders on my ZX10. They don't stick out as far as other brands so there is less chance of one bending or breaking your frame where they bolt on, or digging into the ground and causing your bike to flip over and tumble when it's sliding. They also have replaceable sliders too. Here's a link: http://www.woodcraft-cfm.com/cgi-bin/co ... egory=oo13

Hey Dan,
I have personally tested them a few times  , both on the road and the track and all I can say is that it's a worth while investment.
I personally only used that full alloy ones, in some cases apart from the knob grounding down also had the bolt bend.

Broke a bike's frame with the woodcraft shorties... Having said that, I have them again on the current bike and will have them again on any track bike I own. Crashed 6 times and that was the only time something really bad happened (it was also the only damage to the bike that day), all others resulted on a few scratches to the fairing and nothing else.

Thanks Nelso, I'll be sure to keep the Woodcraft sliders in mind :). How ironic, the link you sent me had an endorsement from GMD Computrack. 17yrs ago when I was doing my engineering degree I undertook some work experience for Greg McDonald (owner) out at Regents Park. Greg let me practice using his computrack system and then one night Peter Goddard comes in with his ASBK title winning Suzuki to have it measured up. I distinctly recall Greg telling Peter that if he drops the eccentric swing-arm pivot by only 2mm that would improve one dimension of the bikes overall handling.

Thanks also to EDU for comments. I must say, only 1 in 6 crashes constituting significant damage sounds like a pretty good record. :)

Thanks Kaneg. The knob grinding down would not be a concern, but a bolt bending may.

My next question would be, do I go for the sliders that require cutting holes in the fairing or ones that require no cutting? I figure that the difference in mounting may actually create more leverage for bending if they aren't secured directly to a frame/engine bracket mount.

Thoughts?

We have been selling "these" for 7 years and in my experience ppl don't like drilling their fairing unless they have to, so they will mostly take the ones where there is no need for the fairing cut.

We have these, and your delivered price is $80.75 using your voucher code KSRCVC

I just had my bike computracked by Nigel Pitsch to fix the geometry and straighten it and it made a huge difference to the way it handled.

Hhhmmm ... and to think of all the bikes I would be around if I had have accepted a job offer rather than pursue more study

I wonder if the design calculations I made for a suspension dyno machine were actually put into production? :o

I had Oggys on my ZX6 had my bike fall down my driveway(pebblecrete and sloped) slid down the driveway and where they bolted snapped off from the frame when it went down, did a truck load of damage. Had to reweld the frame to fairing mounting replace the right hand footpeg mounting and brake master. Shorten my can, and replace the right hand clip on and front brake lever.
Done friggen less damage high siding at Wakefield.

So its how well and where there mounted is the key ingredient in my opinion.

Thanks for the other perspective Zedex 6. We're you crash knobs mounted directly to your frame, engine bracket, or to a bracket extending from either of these points?
