Mounting your own tires

I'm tired of paying the price of tires from my local dealer so I have decided and purchased my latest rear 190 50 70 Pilot Power II and the tools and am going to mount it myself. I've done this before but it's been a long time ago, any suggestions would be appreciated. They say once you've mounted a tire you'll never go back to women??? I got the tire online for $153.00 including shipping and it's manufactor date is Oct 2012, compared with $265.00 if I buy from the dealer. The dealers tires are usually a couple of years old by comparison. Jim Beam is a given and plenty of lube. I've got two twelve inch spoons and a bead breaker. Any ideas will be appreciated especially the smart ass ones. Cheers!

Don't ya just spin it on a stick and wherever it stops put the weight at the top? Then repeat until there's no space left for weights on the rim

Big thing I think is to make sure when mounting and dismounting tyre to ensure bead of tyre is in well in centre of rim. If not it is a shit fight. Heat the tyre in the sun before mounting. The guy who taught me to fit tyres used a big rubber mallet to hit the bead over the rim. That concerns me with the delicacy of the brake discs. I use tyre levers similar sizes to you and use cardboard for rim protection. I do the whole lot with the levers. Bigger levers can chew the aluminium of the rim if you swing on them. Little levers let you know ehen something is wrong- before you do damage. Be careful not to scratch the area where the tyre bead sits coz it may cause a permanent leak. I had a shit fight with a front tyre I fitted second hand to one of my er6s recently- it came off my ZRX originally and I must have stretched the bead slightly in two spots on one side of the bead removing it from zrx. No matter how much air I shot in (tried three compressors) the bastard leaked between the rim and bead and wouldn't pop over. In the end (after 3 hours of swearing and fucking around, I had the idea to use the beadbreaker to install the bead from the inside of the tyre on that side. Job done.
There is a lot of satisfaction to be had in doing this job yourself and if you take your time you know it is done properly. A mate of mine got his first new tyre fitted to his KLR650 here recently by the local dealer- they fitted the tyre BACKWARDS, didn't seat the bead and broke the front speedo drive in the front wheel. Good job wankers.

Thanks for all the replies. The u-tube video was great. I've done this before but with tube tyres. KY jelly looks like the trick and I have plenty of it. I might try using the leftovers when my wife and I are finished. You know put down a plastic sheet to catch it all. Thanks again, I'll post something when I get it done.

Might want to try Y2KY Jelly (Y2K compliant).
It allows you to insert 4 digits where only 2 would go before...

I looked into tire fitting myself - I have not seen mention of rim protectors? Seemed like a good idea.

I also found Dyna Beads. At first I assumed this was rubbish, but the more I looked at it the more sense it made. Anybody tried it?

In the end I found a shop locally that would fit and balance for $25 if I brought in just the wheel and tire. Bargain.

you can use a little soapy water for helping to fit & seal the bead. You can also use Armoall. Anything slippry will do the job.
