performance possibilities

Mon Jul 19, 2004 10:40 pm

hey,
Im Glenn. i Have a 96 zx6r. i recently went to the drags and was rather impressed with my time of 11.8s down the 1/4 but then i dont know how fast my should or could go. so i guess thats my 1st question. secondly someone said it could do better, now whether thats my riding or the bike i dont know, but whatever i tried it only went slower i had like 15 runs and like half were btween 11.8 and 12s.
my bike was a race bike so doesnt come to the party till like 10000rpm. it has been jetted and something changed to the fuel thing because its ultra sluggy below 5000rpm.
what can i do to make it go faster? i was thinking a new tune up job any thoughts, it has an exhaust too btw. but yeh all thoughts welcome

Cheers, GLenn

Sport Rider web site lists the 97 zx6r at 11.1 So Your in the ball park with how many k's on it and how much Dragging experience. My hats off Glenn.

drag racing brings new challenges....
you wanna go fast.....you have to make some changes....
why???
coz all bikes are a compromise....

so where do we start???
the tune up...yep....

then change the gearing
we want to gear your bike down (numerically higher)
so that the place is makes all its power (10,000 rpm upwards)
is of more use...
in other words lets get the bike into its powerband earlier....
and you do that by gearing down.....
either by a smaller front sprocket or a larger rear sprocket...
I suggest you either get a larger rear ...say with 2 extra teeth
to start....
and if not quick enuf...go to a smaller front sprocket...say down 1 tooth less...
you may have to change the chain ..when you do this....
the sprocket size changes...with the change in the number of teeth!

do the above
the bike WILL accelerate quicker....
(but have a slower top speed which is NOT a problem on the track
as I gather you are not getting to 240kmh at the end of the ¼mile)

if you are experiencing wheel spin...
when at the track...drop the REAR tyre pressure
about 5-8 psi...but no lower than about 27 psi
pump it up again if you intend riding home!

couple of things to try

cheers

Dropping the suspension abit is another yeah??

To make it that little bit hard for the front to lift, allowing you to push it hard??

i reckon if you do all the above you should have a rocket

hey
its glenn again, that was my first time at the drags but as i said out of like 15 races it didnt seem to go below 11.8. tune up must be worth a go. but my bike does have wicked top end speed 250km is the max ive gotten it to, think thats as fast as it will go. not to sure how many km/s the motor has on it, the bike didnt come with a speedo since it was a race bike (was taken off to reduce weight) but its had an engine change in its life. gearing stuff sounds like more hassle then its worth, probly because i know nothing about it. tyre pressure...check, something to keep an eye on. keep the ideas coming.

Glenn,

IMO gearing is not more hassle than its worth. Its really quite simple and inexpensive. We're all here to give you any info you need if you want to find out more about it. For starters, just buy a bigger rear sprocket (+/- $45) and/or smaller front sprocket (+/- $15). Ideally, you want the bike to be at maximum revs in top gear AT the finish line - not before it and not after it. It doesnt matter if your bike can do 250kmh if it reaches that speed 200m past the end of the 1/4 mile.

Honestly, if someone showed me a way of getting faster times for an outlay of under $100, Id take it.

Cheers

did I do that....????? hahahahha
btw
James I agree... with your comments...

with a bike...gearing is sumfing you can play with ...cheaply
(unlike a car...which is mega$$ for new diffs)

cheers
