Integrated Tail Lights

Postby Gigantor83 » Wed Oct 24, 2007 11:01 pm

I have been thinking about buying an integrated tail light set-up for the ZX7R but i'm not sure about the legality of it.
Does anyone know the laws for these in QLD??

i dont think they are legal as the brake light and indicator would be too close together.

I think it has more to do with the two indicators not being far enough separated, but no it's not legal in QLD.

Whatever you do, if you get them make sure you wire them in properly, unlike the nob on a CBR I followed onto the island who only had one of the led's in his tail light working most of the time except over the occasional bump or when he put his brake or indicator on...then it just went totally spastic

Unfortunately they are not legal, even though other drivers notice the tail light but not the indicators, that's ADR for you.

Regarding those that do not flash correctly, there could be a couple of reasons: Bad wiring has been mentioned and teh other is bad quality of teh unit. Make sure you get fully EU approved ones.

I can't get you the original shaped tail light for teh ZX7R, only the ZX6,9,10 and 12 R.

One way of getting past that stupid law is to fit additional small indicators (flush or stalk ones) along with the tail light ones, that way Mr Plod will be kept at bay!

A friend of mine put LED indicators in his bike and they flashed at a stupidly fast rate, reason being not enough resistance in the circuit and the bimetallic strip was working overtime (LEDs have very low impedence while filament bulbs have high impedence). Solution: He put the original globes in series with the LEDs but hidden inside his tail unit. You can also use a resistor if you know what you are doing

Flasher units in all vehicles flash fast when one globe is out,
this is suppose to warn you of the problem.
When LED's are fitted the flasher unit thinks a globe is out [due to the low current draw of LED's, 21watts for a globe and approx 9 watts for LED's]
you can use a resister or hide the globe somewhere which brings the circuit back up to the current draw the flaser unit is expecting
Or you can now buy 3pin 12volt flasher units that are set for 1 globe and 1 LED[per side] which also has the benefit of still bing able to flash fast if either globe or LED is not working, about $20 - $30 :D
