Just a few things I have learnt over the years when it comes to helmets

1- You get what you pay for so if you buy a $2 helmet you must have a $2 head

2- The cheaper Poly type helmets bounce when hitting the road so they dont absorb the impact as much as the fibre/carbon type so pass on the impact to your head and neck.

3- Race rep means just that . With all those vents etc it aint going to be as quiet as a road only[ just made for road riders] type helmet

4- spikes etc attached to helmets can lead to neck injuries when sliding down the road as they may keep your neck at a funny angle.

5- Buy the very best you can afford . you only have 1 life

Ear plugs are damn cheap bought by the boxful...if noise is your only complaint...

Use earplugs regardless of the helmet as air noise, engine noise, surrounding traffic are all excellent ways to get permenant hearing loss & ringing in the ears. I ride with plugs all the time and when i forget i realise shortly thereafter and put em in quick smart!

you really have to be carefull about how long you wear ear plugs for.

they lower the "noise floor" of your hearing, so if you exposed to something really loud after taking them out you can permanently screw your ears.

Its also good for your ears to put up with loud noise (within reason) occasionally. It helps them build up resistance to damage.

I won't wear them in traffic either - I think that's asking for trouble.
Out on the twisties or freeway is a different story though.

my beloved new helmet, thanks tanya!

funny,
there are more expensive ones and there are less expensive ones, but when you try on the one that just fits right, you'll know! this KBC wasn't top of the line, but has everything i'll need out of a helmet (quick change visor system ie: no tools, vents galore, periferal vision is AWESOME, and most important: I can wear it for days straight and have no fatigue.....)
well, i've only had it for 2 days so that last comment may be exaggerating a touch......
oh, and for the record, i wear ear plugs on ride days/trips and none in traffic.....

I was hesitant the first time I used ear plugs as well. However, in traffic they don't seem to make it harder to hear whats going on around you, and in the traffic I go through, I don't bother as I am not really going fast enough for the helmet to make much noise anyway.

All the same, it might be an option worth considering before buying a new helmet which probably wont be terribly much better.

I thought my HJC was noisy, then I bought an ARAI (because it was a better helmet, rather than for noise) and it just makes noise in different places.

Most of the noise I actually get is the air flowing from the top of my screen and hitting me around chin height.

i find plugs even the noises out, so you'll still hear mr doof doof in his car, that horn beside you or even the squeal of your locked rear tyre. It just takes the sharp "edge" off the sounds and evens it out. I'd say it would knock everything down about 9-12db or so, depending on how peircing the noise was.

I have a set of musicians ear plugs which i got as im i qualified audio engineer.
thay are great as they cut the world down buy 25dB but you dont lose much in the way of definition. etc

but at $250 a set, probably not for everyone.

but i kinda also like the sounds on a bike, but that could just be withdrawl at the moment.

I have a shoei tz-1 and it's great got it cheap 2. Since then i have noticed if you squeeze on each side of a cheaper helmet say a nitro it has alot of movement in it. You dont get this with the shoei..

Saw Shark helmets on discount at PS, around $170. They look good compared to my current MDS helmet.

Anyone have experiences with the Sharks ?
