Helmet Painting (How to added)

Postby bigtez » Mon Dec 12, 2005 12:43 pm

Does any body know anything about airbrushing helmets? I have done some airbrushing on R/C car bodies and would like to try my hand at helmets and other things.
I have heard that some paints damage helmets and there are specific types of paint for helmets. I haven't been able to find much info so far but will keep looking.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Terry

I looked into this a while ago. I have a plain silver/grey helmet I wanted to have painted. I ran into a number of problems.

1) No one wanted to provide me with any info about the type of paint that could be used.
2) No one could direct me towards any research that showed that painting helmets stuffed them up.
3) Most places that wanted to paint the helmet had to remove the Aus. standards sticker.

I gave up.

It's only the early poly carbonate type helmets that couldn't be painted.

I want one like this but Linda says she doesn't want to look at it while we're out 2 up

I looked into painting my Lid to match "Tiggr". The helmet needed to be Fiberglass construction & a basic paintjobbie started at $400
Needless to say I'm still wearing a Plain black Fiberglass Shoei.

from the Arai Helmets site FAQ.........

1. Is painting of the helmet and use of decals allowed?
Painting of an Arai helmet is allowed (check the instructions in your manual), But before
painting remove all plastic (polycarbonate) parts. DO NOT remove any (trim) rubbers
and cover the complete inside of the helmet to avoid the agressive fumes will damage the inner part of the helmet. Self-adhesive decals ('stickers') may be used on the helmet, they don't have any influence on the material.
Do Not remove the inner lining, chinstrap nor trim rubbers at all circumstances!

Jeff (hubby) had his helmet repainted by a fellow that was recommended by City Yamaha. He only had it done plain black, and then put a decal on it. I can get his details if required.

Cheers

OK so only paint fibreglass helmets.
would it matter that most new(ish) helmets have a kevlar/fibreglass composite shell?
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
