Fuel and ZZR600's (again)

I've had the ZZR600 for a few months now and I've been trying a heap of different fuel. I've tried just about all of the different brands and both Premium and Standard Unleaded...

I can't say I've noticed any performance difference between the two (my bike is still stock). The manual says to run "Unleaded" and the dealer told me to put Premium (except Optimax :) ) in it... Of course, every time I pull up at the pump and notice the price difference between the two, it's pretty hard to reach for that Premium nozzle (given that I can't tell the difference performance wise).

However, I was just looking over the numbers this morning (I've been keeping track of my fuel fills) and was surprised to discover that despite being up to 10c/L dearer, it's actually cheaper ($/km) for me to run Premium - by up to 0.5 c/km. Now that doesn't sound very much :P , but if I do 600 km's in a week, that's $3...

So now I don't feel so bad about paying that extra $2 odd for my tank of fuel!

Cheers,
Russell.

I found that too.
I found BP Ultimate, and the new vortex to be the best for mileage

I dont do the milage thats some of you guys do, but I always put it down to false economy with cheap fuels. Its gotta be better for your motor & since bike maintenance n parts are so expensive I just pay the extra dollar or so a tank. Thanks for the vigilance though Russel i now have another point to justify the use of the good gear. Topstufff.
Cheers Brett

Just started using BP Ultimate last week - that's what made me check back over the numbers. I got 342 k's out of 16L - the best economy I've ever had out of it and I haven't been taking it particularly easy...
That's better than what I used to get out of the 250 on std. unleaded!

Russell.

21km/ltr is not bad at all (though Smitty will probably start spouting stories about 25km/ltr or more ;) )
But I'm jealous - I only ever got that when I was taking it easy.
Normal commute I was getting average of 18-19.

Ditto to Ty's findings for me as well...

I have only run normal ULP a couple of times, and each time I noticed the bike pinging just a little bit more around town. So I stick with PULP now. On my trip from Toowoomba up to the Coast (and back) I used...bugger all fuel...about $20 and got something like 20km/L - not bad considering I wasn't riding "economically". I don't know exactly the mileage, that is just a rough guess.

Our Renault has a particular liking for Vortex for whatever reason and always seems to run better with it, than anything else. All the 98RON fuels we've used just seem to cost more money, there is no difference that we, or the on board computer can pick up.

Just prior to my 12000k service, I was getting about mid 19's (low 19's on normal unleaded) This was the 3rd tank after the service, the other two were both Vortex...

Looking back over the numbers again, the first few tanks of fuel gave me about 21 - and I'm SURE I was taking it easy then - dropped into the 19's pretty quick and has only just popped back above 20 now. Maybe something to do with the service (new air or fuel filter perhaps? they replaced both in the service)

Russell.

I run 7Eleven premium. *ducks for cover*

She's jetted a bit rich, so Ultimate and Optimax tend to make it backfire a bit. Standard unleaded just doesn't cut it 'cos the poor old girl sounds like someone's dropped a bucket of spanners on it. And the 7 Eleven's on my way home from work.

I get 17-18km/l when I'm commuting. On the highway I once got as high as 24km/l. Unfortunately, the beastie's thirst rises wif der revs ....

My past bikes used to regularly get 20km/l with plain ULP and 22-22.5km/l with optimax/ultimate/vortex/8000 (though 8k used to kill my EL250, pop, fart, choke choke). This worked out to an extra 20km/tank, which worked out to be about 50 cents a tank, given a bi-weekly refill that was about $100 a year i was saving. :-).

However the new bike SEVERELY needs a tune, either that or im just naturally too ham fisted with the throttle. Putting premium in the last two tanks has yielded a whopping 15km/L!!!! (as opposed to the usual 11-13km/L). It needs a tune, but i can cope with the (lack of) economy for the moment *grin*.

Yada yada yada...except mine used to run pretty well on Optimax, and doesn't run very well mid-winter on normal unleaded, coughs and farts like it's been filled full of beans and cabbage

I use BP Ultimate now, The local Shell converted, and I get better mileage in warm weather. Usually between 19-21km/l in either case.
