Helicoils?

Does anyone know if the A8 GPz900r (1991) used thread inserts such as Helicoil? I noticed a 1/2 broken one when replacing the handlebar mounting bracket, and under closer inspection it looked like there was an insert in the other mounting bracket hole as well. It also looked like (to me anyway) there were inserts for the bolts holding the pickup cover. Now it's possible both of these had been repaired previously (both showed a bit of wear and tear prior to me breaking them) but just wondering if thread inserts are definitely not normal. Ta.

apart from the ones that I have had to put in my 85 Gpz750r however none where yours are, so I would believe no they are not standard IMHO

Nutserts are usually used where mounting metal is too this to support a direct thread such as in a frame.

Helicoils make good repairs in thicker mounting where original thread is stuffed.

I prefer Keyserts to Helicoils if you ever need to do a thread repair.

Thanks everyone. If they were OEM then I would know what brand coil to remove/replace, but I guess I'll have to figure it out. I know that there is a specific tool to remove helicoil inserts, does anyone know if it would work on "any" coil, and in particular one where the first thread is halfway down a hole?

FYI the original bolts for the handlebar mount are surprisingly short, they doesn't seem to even penetrate halfway through the hole. Add that to a low torque spec (as for plug cover bolts) and it would be pretty easy to strip the threads if you were even a little bit heavy handed. Which I can be, so I went for a Warren & Brown 322500: 10-140FT.LB-1/2 deflecting beam tension wrench as it gave me the full bike torque spec range in one tool.

I favour tightening till it strips, then back it off a half turn ....
