1977 Z1000 - Exhaust note

Thu Oct 30, 2014 1:10 pm

Original mufflers, only 14K (miles), was going to put on V & H 4 into 1 but the look of the 4 into 2 has grown on me. Any hints/secrets on getting a better (louder) sound out of this system? My 80 year old Dad reckons easy, just punch a bit of reo bar through the baffle like he used to do in the 50's on his AJS. Dont think that is way to go but any ideas out there?

It's very hard to get a better note out of these pipes, unless you basically knock everything out. The internal baffle chambers are all welded in place internally and are a nightmare to get into. There are 4 internal chambers - not just one. So knocking a hole in the first chamber, only opens up the exhaust by a little bit - lots of work for almost no difference in sound. Ask me how I know this  I think it was 1982 when I first tried this mod......totally stuffed an otherwise good system.

Best bet by far - if you really want this look - is to get a 4-2 aftermarket system. These are still made and sold in the US. Keep the OEM system unmolested as it will be worth far more as a stock spare part in years to come. Very hard to find a good 4-2 OEM system for a Z1000A1 these days.

If you want some real trick 4-2 pipes, try and get some of these. You will need to scroll down the page a bit.......or just read each installment ;)

I think the OEM ones know will fetch bloody good money, but have a heart and don't butcher them and go for Gos's option if you want the noise

I have the V&H on my 76 z650 - the sound is pretty good (i wouldnt know what they sounded like back in the day) BUT you can take the guts out of the pipe by unscrewing a single nut.

The sound of exhaust running straight-through is deafening.

Don't even think about it.
In the late seventies, I was yet another idiot that knocked the baffle out AND even drilled some f*******g holes into the end of the exhaust.
I'm still embarrassed.
It was worse than useless - the sound was shithouse.

Well, have kept the original pipes, Terry at Redline Exhausts has worked his magic on the original mufflers and am very happy with the sound and performance. Would recommend him to all (if you're in Adelaide) and price was excellent.

Good news mate, you have to love it when a plan comes together. :kuda:

I sent the Premier Pipes off to a bloke who reckons the inside of the pipe might be ok and the rust holes went outside in. Have not got it back yet but fingers crossed.
