Z1-R Engine re-repaint

Postby slimey » Mon Nov 09, 2015 9:06 am

Finally managed to get some paint on my Z1-R engine over the weekend.
Previous attempt was a pretty inconsistent and crappy mess so had to rub/scrub the affected parts back (again!)

Anyway got a chain block and some threaded rod and made up a lifting and supporting rig for the job.
Hoisted up the engine, washed it and blew off any dust/moisture.
Masked off the parts not to be painted and checked temp - about 20degC and not too humid.
Applied the VHT engine enamel (satin black) per the instructions and was very excited to watch the paint dry -
came out pretty good, a huge improvement on the previous fuckup!

Covers to be polished and new RH points cover 2b fitted

Excellent Mr slime. :kuda:
If you have a hot gun it wouldn't hurt to give a hit to help the paint cure and harden.

G'day Jim,
Just a very mild soap solution - few drops dishwashing liquid in a bucket of water.
Then wiped down with a clean rag, blew it all dry, masked it up and applied paint straight away before any dust had a chance to settle onto clean surfaces.
Applied several coats - VHT spec calls for 10 mins between coats (with all coats to be applied within 1 hour)
10 mins was about how long it took to go right over/under/around the engine so timing worked out ok.
Very fiddly around the top head fins - needed to attack from all angles to get full coverage.
Used one whole can on the engine, so now have a spare can for touch-ups once the engine is fitted.
(Also have a nicely painted section of chain - hehehehe) :cheesy:

Give it a crack - I'm no paint guru and if I can do it so can you!
Just need to make sure surfaces are clean, free of grease/oil/flaky paint/dust etc
and put lots of thin coats on rather than a few thick ones.
