well happy to report that some progress was made yesterday with this old rig. It had that hot-start problem which has been fixed - but had subsequently developed this random issue where it simply wouldn't start at all !

After taking the old girl for a massive strop a couple of weeks ago - where it went just fine thankyouverymuch - it simply refused to start on every attempt since..... :?

The ECU does have a sequence of faults that are blinked out by an LED on the front (heh it was pretty hi-tech for 1983  ) - and the fault code indicated that there was no engine pulse signal from the coils, being received at the ECU ??

Anyway, did some checking yesterday with the multimeter, as I wanted to ride the geeper to the last cR coffee night for this year.......it seemed that the coils were in fact getting a +12v signal when the ignition was switched on......but still nothing being sensed by the ECU ?? Bizarre......

So I swapped out the ignition unit for a spare - just thinking that there may have been a fault in the Ignition box ?

Bugger me, it cranked up almost straight away.........but even after I swapped back to the old IC igniter - it still started ??

Gave it 10 minutes to cool off a bit............and it wouldn't start at all with that IC igniter fitted. Swapped back to the other (good) one - and instant start. I have left this unit in now - and it started easily at coffee as well as this morning.

So *maybe* just maybe that problem has been solved. Which would be nice, as this bike has 6 months rego on board, and I want to use some of it.......including a bit of a shake-down coast run either later this week or early next week.

Is a lovely old bike to ride, very stable in corners due to the long wheelbase but not something that you can flick through the twisties with a wicked dememeanor  - I hope to the do the CDT tour on this bike (with PC riding the Pearl) - we will see how reliable I can get the old Geeper before the end of Feb .....

Good on you Gos'!

Love those old GPz's, hope to be picking up an '83 750 basket case, so may be picking your brain for parts suppliers/contacts.

Cheers,
Pete

Hi Pete - long time no see mate :kuda:

Let me know what you need, there are a few places out there with bits for these bikes - I know a bloke down here who has one of these in parts and hasn't done anything to it for a couple of years.

On ya knees Pinchy  looks like it will be the Pearl anyway on the CDT in 2012, the 1100 is going heaps better now I have changed the IC igniter to a different one - but it still has some hesitation issues at WOT, which is not something you want on a CDT !!

Keep working on it Gos, pretty keen to see the GPz in action. I love them too ;)

Although I agree, hesitation at WOT is not something you want on the CDT

I may be skippering a super tanker on the CDT. It hesitates at everything and it's injected!
The 1100 will be fine

Hi Dave,

Yes it has been a while since I've frequented here as I have spending six days a week on a boat for the past year.

Haven't got the bike here yet, but it sounds as though it is about 98% there. Will let you know how it all turns out if and when the crate arrives.

Cheers,
Pete

P.S. G'day Phil!
