Hanging out to get it going but diverted a lot of time and cash into the trackie and then there are all those stupid little things that hold it up.

Question, Will a front alloy rim from an 82 - 83 Z1000 (Eddie Lawson jobbie apparently) fit the 77 Z1000 ?

unfortunately not mate. The brake rotor diameter is different, the caliper mounting bolts won't match the 77 caliper bolt spacing - pretty sure the axle diameter is different as well ?

The forks are 37mm so they don't bolt in to the 77 clamps either. You could modify a set of 82 clamps to fit the 77 frame - and then the entire front end will drop straight in - but its not really that much of an improvement.

If you want a lighter front wheel - lace up an aluminium rim to the stock spoked hub.

I know this might sound like an odd question but can you swap the forks so the calipers are at the rear like the A2?

yeh that is easy enough - just have to lift the bike up so you can drop front wheel - undo brakes - drop forks out and swap sides. This puts the calipers at the rear.

Alloy rims and new spokes arrived today. Hopefully get a chance to start rebuilding the wheels sometime in the next couple of weeks/months

Was looking at these CP 5569 4 Piston calliper Kit Master with cylinder for $1150. Are they worth the dollars or are they WOFTAM?

Thinking you could make up a set of decent brakes by scouring some breakers for parts and for allot less!

those 4-piston calipers look great in the picture and would look awesome on the bike. Better brakes are available at wreckers for a lot less, but the issue then will always be having to make up the adapter plates - which you get in that kit. Personally I would just be going for a better m/c and braided lines, and better pads. The stock calipers work OK for normal road riding with just these improvements.......but if you have a few bob to spare, that kit looks the shizzle !!

Trying to get the balance right between building a bike that is a little bit special but not wasting too much money on stuff that doesn't make a great deal of difference either in performance or looks is the challenge.

I looked at late model radial mount callipers but making an adapter for them is a little more tricky. I was really thinking about doing something like this but using the later 6 pot callipers off the zx7 p model

The kit looks attractive because there is no rooting around, everything is included just bolt up and go

At the moment I will need new m/c, braided lines and pads, haven't split the callipers yet so not sure of what they are like inside so there is a few hundred to chuck at there anyway. Rebuilding the 6 pots off the zx7 are pretty expensive.

that 4-spot conversion looks good not sure what the 6-spot calipers of the 7 are like, I know the 6-spotters on the early ZX12R were not much chop compared to later models.......they felt very wooden to me when I rode one years ago. Smithy will be along shortly to tell you otherwise

just need to make sure you have clearance on the inside - spoked- side of the wheel. There is not a lot of clearance when fitting calipers with bigger bodies.......they tend to foul the spokes. Just something to keep in mind ...

Wheels are all apart and ready for the next stage. I was hoping that I could anodise the hubs gold but it doesn't look like cast alloy will take the coloured anodising well. So plan B will most likely be to power coat the hubs black.

Brakes are a funny thing, I love the Nissins on my others bikes so struggle to get really settled with 6 pots on the zx7. I guess it really comes down to expectations and how this bike will be ridden. Then again you are right Gos that would look sweet just have to wait and see how deep the Guvmints Budget cuts are going to go
