That is another great story, thanks for that. I will try to give you a little update with mine but dont expect miracles.

I think that I have figured how to shrink pics now so here are a couple of the old girl when I picked her up.

The first thing I know is that the colour is wrong for this model, master cylinder reserviour, damage to instruments, fork cover and a couple of dodgy repairs, bent front rim. No problem the plan was always to strip her down. Lots of little chrome bits fitted by some previous owner so at some stage she was loved and cared for. Tapered steering head bearings and needle roller bearings in the swing arm, excellent someone must have fixed her up ... BUT THEN .... maybe a crash and after that it looks like she was owned by someone who only had a lump hammer and shifter in the tool box. Unfuckingbelievable ...... genius has bastardised just about every nut, bolt and screw he could get his hands on. dontknow.gif

Not to worry we have the technology .... the old girl is now in a bazzillion bits in the shed. The frame and swing arm are currently getting sandblasted then they are off to PC who will brace up the frame and swing arm. PC also recommended the engine mount and bolt mods so will work on that once the frame is a roller. Fork brace has arrived so I am happy with the progress so far. Still have to order progressive springs.

Gos, 1.50's at EC is very respectable, I was lucky to go sub 1.50's (ony just) on my 6rr. did you do anything to the stoppers??

that is a fantastic link mate !! Some great ideas in there - the EGT, TPI etc - all on an old dunger.......and his frame-bracing looks very tidy as well.....

cheers mate, yeh its not too bad, but 10sec a lap slower than the quick punters in Period 5... ;)

As far as the brakes go - all I did was fit HH pads to the OEM calipers, my own braided lines (1 long 1 short over the wheel), and a m/c from an RD400. These worked really well. The back brake used a floating rear drum, not fixed to the swingarm like standard, it didn't see too much use, but was good when needed ;)

not sure if I have any diagrams of how to brace a stock swingarm......will see if I can find some.

There are a few different ways to brace a stocker - tube-steel additions underneath, or additional ribs along the underside of each swingarm *leg*. Either of these methods normally also has a boxed section in the front area.....

It seems everywhere I turn on this old girl there is an issue, I knew that I would have a few dramas along the way but am figuring I must be able to take a trick soon.

I just pulled the tyres off the rims, yep you guessed it, all rusted to buggery, it has even gone through and just left a smidge of chrome on the outside so you couldnt see it until the tyre was removed. I dont think there is anything on this old girl that has not been seized, cracked, rusted, wornout or just plain rooted. I have not even looked at the motor and hate to think what it is like inside.

Now I am seriously thinking of just getting an aftermarket swingarm, relace the rims to take 17 wheels with 190/180 rear and 120 front .....

Sorry about the rant folks but I had no where to turn ..... anyway she will be all good soon :cheesy:

just one step at a time mate - rusted-out rims are not uncommon, but replacements are easy to get, and cheaper than relacing to 17" rims.....

I reckon just htfu ;) i have had my z900 for over 28 years and personally i reckon the flexing frame and all the other wobbly bits that come standard with these bikes is half the fun of riding them.I take mine through reefton sometimes and yep shes a handfull at pace and im stuffed by the time i have done a good run but it is just so much fun :lol: Shes even done a day at broadford with a 6 year old mitchellin commander on the front ;)

nice pic mate ! It would be a bit short on clearance with that 4-4 still fitted though ?? :shock:

There was a bloke racing at Wakefield recently with the PCRA - on a bog-stock Z1 !! :shock: :shock: unreal - he looked like he was having a ball :lol:

Yep a couple of laps later i found the limits and the whole ass end lifted and shifted accross as bits dug in .

You didn't still have the centrestand fitted did ya ? :shock: now *that* can cause some sphincter-tightening in fast l/handers !!! :kuda:

Finally made a little progress lately. :D

Frame is all sorted and I scored a swing arm from an 82 gs1100, I have powder coated the frame, swing arm and the lower fork legs.

I am now in the process of cleaning up a set of z750 triples, probably shoulda done that at the same time as the frame, not to worry. Starting to fit up new bearings and seals for the steering head and swing arm then I can rebuild the shocks with progressive forks and I nearly have a roller. :kuda:

Now to get the wheels sorted, I have a good front rim so really only need to clean it up but the rear will need new rim. Will go a smidge wider me thinks but nothing too dramatic.

Has anyone had work done at Chris Squires in Sydney or can recommend someone in Sydney or Canberra?

Rear shocks will be next then hopefully I am over the big $$$ spends :shock:

Will post some pics once this is a roller
