z650 Carbs - replacing

Postby metaltriumph » Thu Feb 17, 2011 10:26 am

I have a 76 z650 and the carbs are well worn. I wouldnt mind swapping them for a better set.

The carbs on the bike are actually from a z900 as far as i can tell. The linkages are worn, they flood up but they work ok if you are ginger with them.

What i would like to know is whether anyone has any z650, 750, 900 or z1 carbs for sale? Or know of any others that may fit?

Maybe i should just bite the bullet and buy a new set of flatsides...

like these for $US 663

Al - don't get those flat-slides whatever you do mate - they are way too big for a 650 motor......

what you need is a set of 34mm CV carbs from a later model 650 or 750. These work really well on the 650 motor, and easy to jet as well......the inlet manifold boots will bolt onto your head as well.....worth thinking about anyway

Thanks for the tip Dave. Ill keep my eye out fro a set of later CV carbs.

In the meantime i think i will pull the carbs off and clean and rebuild. Ill orders some new gaskets and needles etc. (once i have verified exactly which model they are from).

Hopefully that may solve some issues. I like the idea of replacing with new though, sounds much easier :)

Hey Al, I have got a mostly complete set of 650 carbs sitting under my workbench that I'm not really sure of the working condition of. The guy I bought mine off threw them and a few other bits and pieces in when I picked up the bike.

I can't say I'm actually going to use them for anything so if you're keen I can drag them out and have a look...they'll still need a good clean and new gaskets etc.

Holy Moley!

Id defo be buying rebuild kits anyway so sounds like a plan. Ill come around and take a look at some stage.

Its either clean and rebuild my carbs, or clean and rebuild your old carbs (that are actually meant for a z650)...

No worries Al. I'd been sitting on them "just in case", but can't really see why now and I could do with a bit of extra cash for the LC so I'm sure we can come to an arrangement if they are any good 8)

I am just about to fit a set of normal slide carbs to the 6fiddy - just to see how it responds with these. The CV carbs have developed an odd idle problem, NFI what is going on at this stage ? But it would be nice to have the original carbies back on this bike.

Al - sing out if you need a hand with the carbs, although being on the Dark side now, its probably easier if MickLC does the set-up.........he is pretty comfortable working on old dungers these days ;)

Is there anywhere in aust that is good to get carb repair kits from or is Z1 the place to go. I have a set of the CV carbs from my '82 KZ650 and it seems to be a mission to find a repair kit to suit them, all i see are kits to fit up to '79 for the 650. Looking at the set pics on the Z1 site the closest looking components are in an 82-85 kz750 kit.

Short answer ? No

Z1 Enterprises is one of the best places, Redline Cycles is another - to get carbie kits.

You can use the 750 kits for your 650 - the 34mm Mikuni CV carns are basically identical between these models, only difference is slight jetting changes between the 2 sizes, this is not an issue with the kits, as they are just gaskets, needle & seats, and any O-rings needed.

The other Keyster kits for the 650's - up to 1979 - are for normal slide-style Mikunis.
