94 ZXR 750 bought back to life

Postby willrcr15 » Thu Feb 07, 2013 8:04 pm

Someone asked for a thread to watch the rebuild, so here it is,
W eve been lucky as it was almost complete, that's all the little bits & pieces, chain, some new after market pieces, some decals even though not quite right, a second engine that seems to be almost new inside, the radiator is the only disappointment as its sat for years & years with water in it & its coroded a bit & having trouble stopping the leaks.
We didnt go after this model or any specific model it was just a random buy on ebay & we now realise we got lucky.
I bought a largish sand blast cabinet & away we went. Full strip down, then an internal engine check then the rebuild.
I'm lucky, dads the other half involved, retired mechanic & loves it, so I supply all the cleaned up parts & he rebuilds them. I'm the ametuer painter but getting there
Anyway the pics should paint the picture.
And thanks to all the blokes here on KSRC for the tips & links & help along the way.

All the frame, brakes, general brackets & everything into the sand cabinet, stripped & primed ready for paint. Better than new as no factory parts get a primer coat just straight on with the colour & bring on the corrosion.

Gone are the black wheels & bring in the green, it was the only Kawasaki green listed in 2 pak & nice colour. They came up like new. Solid green no clear.

Nice work Will, Takes a lot of time & dollars to get some bikes back to original & immaculate condition, The cost is what made me decide on building a streetfighter
What parts are you looking for?

Thanks for the offer of parts, JimZXR might have some of what I need then what he doesn't I'll post a list & see if anyone has them.
The rebuild cost so far is about $1600, thats $1000 for the bike & $600 for parts & paint.
The labour can't be counted or it'll be a 20 000 dollar bike.
So for about $2k I won't feel bad using it & if I wear it out we'll just do it again.
Weve just started on a 97 GSXR 750, another ebay purchase, paid a bit more & got a bit less but Suzuki parts are easier to buy from the US, so it all starts again but seems to be smoother & quicker this time & should end up with another gem.

Another day closer thanks to JimZXR, upper rear cowlings.
The green on the tank is the new, off a code down at the paint shop, the only Kawasaki green listed & it's pretty damn close.

It's turned out pretty nice, it's far from concourse though, that'd be going too far, she'll be mechanically sound, reliable & fresh, nearly all the original parts have been cleaned up & reused, the bores still showing the hone marks & the valves were still within tolerence but we adjusted 4 of them to make it just sweet.
I asked the paint shop about the colour & he said that all the shops should have the same instructions to make it up. It's just Kawasaki Green, he only had one listed & said they'll all have it. I'm using 2 pak & it's a solid colour, so no clear necessary. The other colours, blue & white are bases & require a clear coat over. The green on the tank got a clear coat with the white & blue, just gave it a light sand.
I've never used 2 pak before, only acrylic lacquer & the 2k is the way to go, so easy & glossy, just make sure you cover yourself up, I did a bit in shorts & thongs initially & it was nasty, all sticky & irritable, now its a full suit & breather & gloves but I cant give up the thongs.
Sorry about the missing pic before, that was me rushing trying to do too many things at once.

The engine is perfect, just put a set of Factory pro jets & needles in her & also replaced the Pilot jets with 40#'s & oh so nice.
Paid a grand for her on ebay from a guy in Canberra.
Now it's warmed up I just have the fairings to paint & she'll be good enough for me.
She was worth all the work, everything was there to make it complete.
I'll post the finished pics as soon as she's done.
