Oil Question

Fri Mar 13, 2015 2:47 pm

Hey Gents,

I have always wondered what the protocol is for oil as far as storage/ non usage goes.

If the oil has been replaced and then the bike put into storage or not ridden for say 2, 3 years, will the oil 'go off' so to speak ?

This E2 model I recently purchased is pretty much this scenario.

How about coolant ? How long does factory coolant last even if not used ?

What do you guys know ?

Oil does go off.

Strange when you think it's been sitting in the ground for millions of years. :?

I'd change both to be on the safe side.

I remember another thread like this. madkaw posted a very interesting and informative document all about it. It covered storage methods, temp effects, uv degradation etc etc great article. Got to the end, and the bloody thing was about Olive oil, not engine oil

.. oil does not go off but that only applies to new as yet unused oil
( oil in a sealed container has a shelf life in excess of 20 years according to my contact at Penrite)

used oil in engine should NEVER be left in an engine if you are putting your bike/car into storage. Always do an oil
and filter change immediately before storage. Why ? Over time, the acids and other crap in engine oils that come
from combustion eat engine bearings if left in contact for too long (anything longer than 12 months is too long).
This is called bearing erosion and can result in engine failure when the bike/car is brought out of storage and started.
