Wet, greasy road -rear slides

Sat Oct 02, 2010 1:38 pm

Just came home and the road is pretty greasy and slippery. Turned into a RH bend and had the back end slide out. I know that in the dry if you cut the throttle you can cause a high side but is it the same in the wet?

I managed to maintain a constant throttle, avoid the brakes and the bike straighted up without any problem at all but what I'd like to know is.....is it essentially the same process in the dry as it is in the wet? IE don't cut throttle / avoid brakes / constant throttle?

Is there anything else I should have done? I mean is there anything else I should probably be aware of in that kind of situation? This is the first time I've had the rear end step out on me so any advice would be appreciated :D

Cheers!

yes you can highside in the wet but you are more likely to lowside.

Same applies.

Smooth throttle control.
Dont just shut off more gentlely rolloff
Dont touch the brake
use your body weight to ride out of it and balance the bike back onto the meat of the tyre.

The more likely scenario in the wet is that it will all be over before you know what happened whether you fall off or not ;)

I know about wet tyres not wet roads, especially with wash and wax bike wash

Yeah listen to Russ he has done alot of trial and error testing :)

You wanna borrow my 525 ktm Wayne? With the knobbies, when you accelerate it's either sideways or near vertical and not much in between.
Makes for interesting rides.

Was a bit slippery out there today Wayne. Rode from Sussex home today, didnt bother with Kang Valley or Mac Pass as it was pissing down but it made the Nasho a little more exciting than normal  Just try to be smooth I guess but then again Im no expert as I keep getting told :)

At least I am going the speed limit or above when I crash ;)

Thanks for the advice guys - really appreciate the feedback :D

It was on one of the faster corners in Glenmore Park as you enter from the east and for a moment I thought I was going to either spin or lowside.....but the thought of a highside was my main "oh crap" feeling. Fortunately it stayed upright and I was a little more cautious the rest of the way in :D

Where's that pic of melandri coming onto the straight at Pi??
That's what you do when you slide in the wet, twist harder and do the kuda with your left hand :kuda:

fwiw sounds like you did the right thing Wayne.
Though, like Firey, I've been told my riding advice is of questionable worth ;)

Well it's got to be the road and something on it - I've just spun the car a full 180....doing almost 40kph. Didn't hit anything or anyone....luckily. Have never had my car oversteer before....ever....interesting experience...

All my Subaru does is understeer haha

Exactly Wattie...I've had understeer before but this time she just snapped into oversteer. Suspect there's been oil dumped there recently as it usually an easy corner with no problems in any conditions
