What's happening to make us fall over?

Postby mattyv74 » Fri Nov 05, 2004 11:40 am

Hi Guys, the last few weeks have got me thinking.
If you've come off in the last twelve months, please post brief details of how and why.
What things can WE do to help reduce this?
Are we our own worst enemy? :?

Every time I walk out the door, or drive into the carport, I see my mangled pride and joy.
At the end of the day, I feel off because I misread the road and the conditions.

I think we could all benefit from this thread if people are prepared to share their stories.

Sadly, I can think of more regulars who have come off in the last six months than those who haven't.

Please share your tales...
It is far better to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even if chequered with failure, than to take rank with those who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, as they live in grey twilight that knows no victory nor defeat.

I came off in July 2003, 20 days before my birthday and my Q-Ride :x But I was being a naughty little girl riding by myself on my L's and it was my inexperience that got me. It started to rain slightly so I started hauling ass home. I was in a residential area about 1km from my house when I decided to cut a corner, hit the white line and the front end just slipped out, weeee!

I was only doing about 50km/h but the bike slid about 45m into a gutter (If it didn't hit the gutter it would have gone down an embankment into someones house) I tumbled after it and got knocked out for a bit but I can remember seeing the sparks and the two elderly gentlemen watching the whole thing  They picked me up off the road and commented on how I look like I was 12 or something, thanks pops. A guy who was coming the other direction and nearly ran me over took me home while I bled all over his front seat and children.

It just came down to my lack of experience, no knowing my bike/conditions and no-one telling me to stay freakin clear of the fuggin white line! I can see myself coming off very soon because I ride like a freak, I really think it comes down to luck though. Of course certain circumstances such as behaviour and weather could alter your chances but it's just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Tyre manufactuers are making their tyre really slippery now so that we will all fall off and inject more funds back into the industry on repairs. :?
At least thats my excuse.
Seriously though my off was entirely my fault and im still beating myself up over it, simply a case of too fast and misreading the road.

Hmmm, let me see now.

You all know that the earths rotation speeds up every 8,000 years,

Well it did it just as I was dropping into turn 1 at Eastern Creek...

The second time I ever rode a bike I parked it down an embankment and did a superman over the handlebars coming to rest after several commando rolls...

It was on an old Honda so I don't speak of the incident... Please don't hold this against me...

Well mine was 7 months ago, had my new ZX10r for 4 weeks. Was going through a single lane round about heading for the exit and the car in front of me, decided at the last minute that it was their exit aswell. They decided to exit across from the entry lane, across a painted road island and in front of me, as i was about to exit. I was too far into the corner to stop, so i tried to speed up enough to go around the car instead of into the side of the car. Problem was i wasnt used to the new bike and gave it to much power and highsided myself. I tried to hold her up, but couldnt and went down on the right hand side trapping my arm under the tank, thus breaking my arm and wrist. Was very glad to have my leathers on, or it could have been worse. The bike had $8000 worth of damage, and was fixed like new, thanks to insurance. Not lookin forward to my premium though next year.
Im still of work 7months later and have just had more surgery to mywrist as it didnt heal. So had a bone graft 2 wks ago, so im back in a cast again and hopefully it will work this time round, as Im absolutly bored shitless, and going f%@$# insane that i cant ride my bike. And my car blew up, so i cant even drive around to get outta this house.
But what shits me the most, is that the mother f#@$%er driving the car didnt even stop to see if i was alright.
Well thats my little story.
Cheers S10

White lines in the rain are awesome fun... as long as it's only the rear tyre hitting the line, it's the easiest way to feel like Garry McCoy!

I wrote my last bike off going too fast into a corner on a blind crest. Too fast and not paying enough attention.

I just found out today that after an extensive day of testing on Monday that I have successfully made it onto the Police motorcycle course. They only take 8 people every 2 or 3 years, so I am pretty bloody stoked!

The 1 day test was hard, and made me realise how badly I do ride a bike, I'll keep you all informed of how I go during the 4 week course. Should put an interesting perspective on things.

hahaha pmsl dave..well said..can i blame that too?..i came off twice..heres
my stories..
1. riding home from the pub, about 3am, cold night, cold tyres, decided it
was a good idea to wheelie past a car full of girls....put it up,
1st,2nd,3rd, went to wave, lost balance a lil, ripped on the throttle & rear
wheel broke traction, kicked sideways & threw me down on my side at about
140-160kph (estimated)..bike slid about 300m, grinding away an engine cover
& spewing oil everywhere..i slid abt 200m behind it, destroying my
lid, jacket, boots, knees (i was in jeans) and gloves..i got coated in oil ...i
wasnt pissed, but was probably not 100% sober..my own stupidity...
2.riding with jase, early morning, bit cool, had done abt 15min ride then
stopped...thought tyres were still warm, dragging knee around the outside of
jase on a left hander & front lost traction, pushed across 3 lanes, bounced
off the armco at abt 80kph...again, hole in motor, oild everywhere, messy
costly clean up...this was my fault, more thru bad judgement than
stupidity..i thought i could lean it hard & trust my tyres..DOH
