Tyre Punctures..

Well I went to ride into work this morning to find a much wider than normal chick strip on my rear tyre... Then as i'm wiping the tyre clean I spot the head of a nail slap bang in the centre of the tyre..


Now is this going to be plugable?? The tyre is still pretty new, so it would suck hard if I have to ditch the tyre.. PLus I've got the track day on the 22nd, where I was hoping to put abit of wear on it...

Now if it is repairable will it be ok for a track day?

Dan If it hasnt leaked all th air out yet,(small hole) i'd plug it & use a tube if possible. Wouldn't use it for atrack day though not worth the risk. May well be cheaper to get a 2nd hand slick at the track.

Get it pluged by properly by a bike shop.They will take the tire off and plug it from the inside,so the plug can`t come out.
As long as its not to big a hole it should be fine.
Shouldn`t use a tube in a tubeless tire.

It had about 8 PSI in it, when I pumped it up at the local servo to get to work today...

I'll do the same on my way home, just to make sure it has enough pressure.. And again tommorrow on my way to work, and I'll take it into somewhere to get sorted..

Either Bob Jane or Harley Heaven.. I doubt I have any other reasonable options out of the city.

But Thanks Brett, I hadn't even given a tube a thought... That should do the job fine.. Got that track day soon and Don't wanna waste the tyre.. The Chick Stip needs some evening out.. BAD..

I wouldnt feel comfortable using a punctured tyre at a track, they really get put through the ringer and forces on them are pretty extreme.
A few bucks for a second hand slick is waaay better than than thousnads and possibly injury from a crash resulting from a crap tyre. Dont try and convince yourself that it will be fine just to save some bucks unless a proper tyre expert tells you so.

(Small print: Obviously I'm joking. I wouldn't be riding it at the track. You never know when a tyre being pushed hard is going to rip apart at the point of greatest weakness. I'd actually be going with what everyone else has said.)

similar thing happened to me except the nail went in the middle of the tyre and out the side, it was a big nail and how it got their i have no idea. i got mine tubed 25 bucks or something stupid like that. i would plug it and put a tube in, but then its your call.

what everyone else said: go the repair, but not for the track. funny that "fine print" post arrdvark!!! haha
yeah sucks having to "ditch" a nice new tyre, had to do that once on a front tyre.... stupid construction site (when stadium was being built)

Well $35 later it's been plugged and I'm back on the road with alot less rubber touching the ground... Yay..

The guy recons the Diablo would be fine for a track day... But I won't risk it.. Got a price of $15 per wheel to do the switch to slicks.. and back.. So $15 per change, per tyre.... This is gunna add up.. hehehe

just remember slicks ARN'T like normal tyres unless your going fast enough its quite possible they wont heat up as much as normal road tyres and consequently will have less grip. they will also more than likely have a much more triangualr profile so will turn in quicker.

BTW your suspension may also need adjusting to cope with the extra grip of the tyres.

I had it happen a few times to my 600 & got it plugged . Once my 600 rear tire had 3 plugs in it & i still hammered the bike around doing about 250kph with 3 plugs in it . :?
