A friendly nod

Postby Spainy » Mon Nov 22, 2004 12:50 pm

Being fairly new to riding i'm a little confused. From reading posts and talking to other riders it would seem that the norm is to give another motorcyclist a friendly nod hello as you pass them. Over the past few weeks when i have been out riding i have passed a lot of riders and only a few of them have returned the gesture.

Is the gesture of the nod dying, have i been unlucky enough to have passed riders that don't nod, or is it because i ride a trail bike?

Any comments?

The further from civilization you get the more waves you'll recieve.
Use to be a lot less bikes so it was more of a "us against them mate" thing. i still do it plenty n get about 1/3 responces. But i dont wave at choppers, dirt bikes or scooters(think they should all be blown up) any more.

Heya,

I nearly always nod, wave or salute other riders.. Saluting is reserved for bikes I like... 8) I don't normally wave, nod or salute cobbers.. However I have waved and nodded at a scooter before...

I only really nod at sportbike riders. Never really to cruisers, dirt bikes or scooters although Im softening towards the cruisers as I have recieved some nods and enthusiastic waves lately. I get a response 3/5 times usually. If I don't get a response I memorize their bike and have a grudge on them from then on.

Sometimes city riders are preoccupied trying to survive in traffic and may not have seen you nod.

I always nod, regardless if whether or not I get a response.

I stopped Nodding when i got the tiggr, as i cant see the other nods on the freeway anymore too busy carving traffic up so i make the extra effort n lift the left hand off the bar for the stationary wave.

I nod to anything on two wheels. I truly don't care if I get a nod in return or not. The nod doesn't cost me anything, and it makes me feel part of the riding community. I know I've missed returning a few, due to concentrating on the road or traffic, at times, but shit happens.

I get the highest number of return nods from sportsbikes, then cruisers, especially locals. Scooter riders aren't even looking, it seems, so never see the nod, and I've never had a dirt bike rider return a nod yet.

No worries. I'm gunna keep nodding :supz:

Next I've gotta figure out how to do the return right-hand-two-finger wave as people fly past me at double the speed on the old road. Or learn to ride faster

HI, ALL! I AGREE WITH MOST OF WHAT YOU ALL HAVE SAID THE PEOPLE WHO DON'T NOD OR WAVE USUALLY ARE THE ONES WHO ARE RIDING COS' IT CHEAP NOT BECAUSE THE LIKE TO. AS FOR HARLY-FERGASON RIDERS, WELL MOST OF THE TIME THEY ARE TO SCARED TO LIFT THERE HANDS AWAY FROM THTE BARS!

Reasons why Harley riders don't wave at other bikers
_______________________________

They're way too cool to acknowledge any non-Harley riders.

They're too busy daydreaming about owning a real motorcycle.

Their engine is too weak to handle the added wind resistance of a waving hand.

The Rottie (in back of the pickup truck with the tied down Harley) is easily upset by rapid hand movements.

Are you kidding? Risk their lives trying to control a Harley with just one hand!

They're too busy humming "Born to be Wild" while fantasizing about being Peter Fonda or Dennis Hopper.

They're too busy figuring out how to pay for next order of genuine Harley accessories (including the "official" HD calculator needed to add up the cost).

If they really have to tell you, you won't understand anyway.

They can't see you because their half-shell helmet keeps falling down over their eyes.

They think we are actually trying to draw their attention to the parts falling off their bikes, and they are sick and tired of it.
