Awareness racebike

Tue Sep 20, 2016 2:01 pm

Hey Everyone,

Its been some time since I've been on here. It's been a rough year to say the least.

We saw a number of you guys down at the supers this year and life was good. Little did we know but it was dumped on it's head 2 weeks later.

My wife Marieke was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

It's been nasty with each step being bad news unfortunately. She's classed as stage three atm so we are hoping to get through this and perhaps back to normality.

There's lots to tell and if people want more info please ask as I've begun a campaign with an attempt to get as much awareness out there as possible.

There's quite a lot of literature about with over 50s but not so much under and considering my wife was a fit and healthy 38 this has taken its toll.

So I decided that with the help of many people I would build an awareness racebike.

The end goal is to race in the Australian support race at next year's WSBK. But that will require some external support. I have a couple of coals in the fire atm but we shall see what happens.

The worst case is I get exposure at track days.

Anyway here's the finished product.

Hi Jonny

I'm really sorry to hear this and hope things go well for Marieke and you guys.
Our thoughts are with you and if there's anything we can do to help out, just ask.

Sorry to hear that and hopefully things will get better. My mum had/is having the same but at 38 that's very young indeed.

The bike looks awesome and will definitely draw attention!! :D

Thanks Javaman,

Yeh it's really young, I hope your mums going ok it effects too many woman.

Unfortunately I know way to much about it now. Marieke's cancer was ridiculously aggressive which seems to be more the case when your young.

Is your mum's estrogen based?

Yeah mate tell us what we need to know or post something up, because I for one have (been lucky enough) have almost no idea about Cancer. Marieke is not much older than me and my Mrs, so it gets your attention for sure!

Thanks Tim,

One of the scariest figures is 1 in 8 woman will get breast cancer in their life. Look around at 8 woman you know statistically one will get it.

My wife has a new saying, each week you boys need to check your significant other for lumps and it's a win win. She gets checked and you get boobs.
If she doesn't think it's a good idea tell her Jonnymacs wife said it will be passed as a law soon lol.

My main push is don't delay even if you're young if you think something is wrong. We found the lump on Saturday, had a mammogram on Tuesday and saw the specialist and had the biopsy on Thursday.

Results a week later, the lump was 22mm by 22mm by 19mm.

4 weeks later after the mastectomy it was 42mm by 42mm by 42mm. Think about it, quadrupled in size!
Spread to the lymph nodes so 14 days after the first surgery she was back in again having her lymph nodes removed.

Without a doubt had we shrugged it off and waited some time I think the cancer would have spread to other vital organs, such was the aggressiveness of it.

When she was diagnosed 2 years ago, everything seemed to move very quick and unexpected. Sort of the things you hear *other people* experienced or in celebrity news!! Then double masectomy etc. Wasn't really expected in her family lineage. It took some times but she accepted it even doesn't want to do chemo etc. It's really surreal when it hits you or someone very close.

All the best.

Thanks Gos yeh it's already got more legs than I originally thought so if one woman goes and gets checked from it and they get it early it will be more than worth it!
