GPz 900r Side & Centre stands

Thu Oct 09, 2014 5:24 pm

Hiya all, I have a couple of queries which aren't covered in the manual.

1. Side stand - during a ride the springs broke (cant imagine it fell off), and after ordering a couple of 2nd hand spares the spring is now so strong it lifts the stand too far and it now brushes against the (correctly tensioned) chain. I can't see any form of stop for the "up" position so are a bit stumped....

*option* use a spacer so that the head of the lower bolt used to connect the side-stand switch acts as a stop.

2. Centre Stand - it wasn't on the bike when I bought it but for my MotoGP pilgrimage (next week) it was suggested and seems a good idea. Installed and works fine, but again I am bemused by the lack of any "up" stop. The only thing that stops the stand from also coming up too far and hitting the chain is the free length (extending out the back of the mounting plate) of the lower bolt used to connect the side-stand switch. This does currently create enough grinding friction but the switch mounting plate is flexing so I don't think this will work for long.......messed up my nice new paint job too :-(

*option* drill a small hole into the centre stand and put in a screw to act as a stop against the bottom of the side switch mounting plate

My suggested options will work but it just doesn't seem resolved properly, so I'd appreciate any experience first.

As far as I can recall there are supposed to be a couple of rubber stops under the left hand muffler. Mine had a 4 into 1 and there was a t-piece hanging from the foot peg hanger (I think) that held a couple of rubbers.

ahhh....mine has an aftermarket 4-1 muffler on RH side so this might be related? Can't see any obvious empty bolt holes on the LH foot peg plate though, and any bracket hanging off here would have to be pretty big to reach far enough to act as a stop for the stands. I just can't find any frame mounting points anywhere close which is unusual given the design resolution of the rest of the bike (A8 version)

Hi
My A2 has both side and centre stands but I also have a 4-2 on the bike not 4-1. The stands all have stops on them.

From memory the T-piece that held the stand stops on my bike bolted into the muffler mounting hole on the left hand footpeg hanger bracket. I believe it's on the tyre side of the bracket. It's been 10 years since I sold mine and I never paid that part much attention, so the memory is a bit rusty.

Can you give a quick explanation of "stops on them"? On mine there is nothing that physically stops the stands from rotating up and into the chain...which is kinda a problem!

Mine has original 2 into one pipes, the centre stand when up sits on a rubber about the size of a 10 cent piece and about half inch thick which is mounted to a small bracket thats mounted on the pipes, the same with the side stand whilst up. If you have a 4 into 1 you may need to sit down and work out a bracket to replace muffler stopper

both stands need the OEM exhaust system fitted. Once you fit a 4-1......then you have to make some custom brackets. The c/stand one is pretty easy - I just used to fabricate a short length of flat plate which bolts onto the l/h pillion peg mount and basically just points down. When you take the bike off the c/stand - the stand should make contact with the end of the plate so that there is at least 30mm of clearance to the chain run.

Thanks everyone, stops into the actual parts (integral) would have made life easier but brackets/stops coming off a LH exhaust (external) make practical sense. Cheers.

The 4-1 that is on my Katana (replaced a 4-2) had a flat piece fabricated on the muffler so the centre stand foot would hit that.

I have some original GPZ900 muffs here and there is a bump stop bracket welded to the left one.
