I thinks you should always leave it in gear and foot on the right brake.
One day you will have half a second to react and pull away from a madman that forgot to brake behind you and you will thank yourself.
Mind you, It is better to have mirrors that you can see out of and behind you to see this madman closing in, which seems to be rare on bikes today.
How expensive are clutch plates anyway, they are cheaper than brake pads??

and they do it for exactly the reasons Ty says. you ensure that the vehicle behind you is actually going to stop before relaxing.
being in the "ready" position makes it quicker to get away if you see something bad about to happen.
