Mate, If you wanna do the off road thing/road thing, you gotta stay kawasaki.
Here is some pics of my KLR650, I owned it for just under a year and did 10,000 k's around western and southern NSW. It served me well on road and off. A good reliable machine. Cheap as chips too.
I reckon it would be so much better than the V-Strom 650 as it is heaps lighter and nearly or as powerfull, and it looks better too, well anything would really. And its got a 23ltr tank, good for 500k's.

This is what i have for my off road adventures.Its old and probably ugly,but it is one great bike for what its designed for.As a matter of fact,i only got back a few weeks ago from a 4 week tour up the east coast via the back ways.Melb to Cairnes,what a trip and the beast never missed a beat.Not bad for a bike with over 100,000 kays on it.A lot of these psuedo adventure bike are exactly that,bloody show ponys!
