Freaky shifter on '98 zx6r

Just on my way back from lunch and when I shifted into 3rd the shifter went twice as far up as it should and got a false neutral. :( First time this has happened. Is the box on the way out? The bike has 47k on it.

Mine did that to me a couple of weeks ago as I was merging onto the freeway in heavy traffic - really bad timing! It's done it one other time previously, but I've only got 15,000k on the clock and it hasn't been ridden hard in that time.

My 02 636 does the same thing more regularly than I would normally want but I tend to clutch in and kick it again and it comes good. I thought it was just me being a bit gammy :oops:

Mines only got 15k as well...

I find that when my bike starts getting false neutrals, or hitting neutral and sticking when going 1-2 then its time to check the oil level. It starts getting a bit gammy when its under the 1/2way mark and gets to be a box full of neutrals when its really really low. (but then again its the most fidgety box ive had yet)

Check the oil level, and if it's more than a couple thou kms old, change it. (which is what i'm sure i'll end up doing later in the week.!)

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I am always anal retentive about that sort of thing. The oil is 1500km old and up to the top.

at 47,000 your bike should be comfortably worn in if past owners were nice to it. It's only little tinbox gpx250's and zzr250's that clap out at 40,000 if ill maintained. You should easily get a further 80,000+ out of it if treated correctly. I'm on 78,500 on my bike and i expect to see just as much again out of it before i consider retiring it (i'm hoping to keep this bike long term, does all i need/want and then some :-) )

I'm actually its fourth owner. I now the first two had it serviced as per the manual ( all the stramps are in the right places). Not sure about the last one though, but he only had it for 10 000 k's and the first thing I did when I picked it up was replace all the fluids. If the exterior apperance is anything to go on though I think I'm right. It's only 800 km's from shims now so I'll get the mechanic (who has a very good rep) to go through it from asshole to breakfast.

Also check your chain tension and the condition of your sprockets, esp the front one, as any excess slack can stuff up your shifts as well.

i think it could be the oil too.

just check for correct oil level

On my old ZZR250, false neutrals was the first sign of my chain getting loose... It's a pretty easy one to check :)

Shes got lots of nice 1500km old oil in her, but the front sprocket has definately seen better days. It had to have a new chain for its roadworthy when I bought it, mabye the mechanic let the sprocket slip through. Has anyone got a picture of a just shagged front sprocket. I'm not sure how worn it should look.

The teeth are still flat at the top but there is noticable concaveness between the teeth if that makes any sense. I tand to be a hypochondriac when it comes to my toys. I also checked my chain tension. It was 5mm to loose. :oops:
