Why bother with a torque wrench ??

I started stripping down the donor engine to replace Dan's gearbox this morning. All was going well until I got to the crankcase bolts, and despite my best efforts, I could only remove 2 of the farkers !
3, yes that's right 3, of my trusty 12mm sockets have snapped
I don't know who tightened these things in but it looks like the compressor & rattle gun is going to get a work-out, just as soon as my neighbour opens his bedroom curtains ( I don't wanna piss him off cause I might need a hand later on to remove the engine from Dan's bike)

Just checked the impact sockets and guess what ?

That's right.......9mm, 10mm, 11mm, 13mm........what the fark happened to the most common size used ?????????
In true, let's fark as many people as we can, it's not a part of the set......so it looks like it's a trip to Supercheap or such like to purchase the said missing 12mm sized socket.

Sounds like a really good quality one is needed, supercheap may not be the answer

Believe to or not, they are good quality (well, I thought they were Draper) 1/2" drive ....
the bit that surrounds the nut/bolt head has split .........thought about welding them back up, but by the time I've done that I coulda been shopping and back

What the!?! - you must live on the good side of Epping (if there is such a thing ) my neighbours could not give a stuff be it welding, grinding, blaring arab music, car subwoofers that literally make my walls vibrate or the car going up and down the driveway 10 times a night between the hours of 1am-6am.

Last night about 2am the neighbours had some rice-car with a fart can exhaust just idling for a good 10mins ..then started giving it little revs here and there... then dropped a burnout leaving the court..

I used to care, i tried to keep noise down as courtesy - but im so past it. I use what i want when i want now.

FYI, 12 mm bolt heads are a Japanese bolt standard. ISO standard M8 bolts have a 13 mm head. Still, there's a hell of a lot of JIS bolts in australia so you've got every right to be annoyed. My Kincrome set doesn't have 1/2" drive 17 and 19 mm sockets. Guess what my GPX and TZR use on the M12 bolts...

after years of working on bikes..and lots of differnt cars (from SAABS to Marzdars to Bimmers..plus the odd Holden)
I have had to accumulate every socket size from 6mm thru to 32mm for my ½"drive kit

...in 1 mm increments
I have a tool box JUST for the socket sets

and then of course we can start on the impact socket sizes

have you gotten anywhere with the rattle gun/compressor yet?

if not then its probably a good thing.. or if you've done em already then ignore this post.


i wouldnt use a rattle gun on something that appears to be overtight or just locked in place like what you've described - a breaker bar thats a good length (foot and a half long) and a decent brand name impact socket that's a six point, not twelve point, will do the job better and safer than a rattle gun would.. then you can just apply more torque using your arm and pushing downwards with gravity if you can... just might need somebody to hold the engine while you do it.
