r.e. Facebook, I avoid all the "is current'y doing" crap as well as most of the pointless games. Main reason im on there is friends & family are on there and they share photos & whatnot through there. Oh and the occasional game of "biker madness" 
. My missus is still yet to join even though a lot of her friends are hassling her to do so.
As to twitter, aside from getting the occasional bit of silly crap from some celebrity's it's pointless.
