Road Worthy Problems - 2002 ZX6R REAR GUARD

Hey guys, im trying like mad to get my bike registered as i let the rego lapse for 6months while without a licence.

I bought the bike 8 months ago and the rear guard (black plastic that the number plate screws into) was cut short. It came with the current Road Worthy Cert. so i wasn't worried about getting another one.

However iv been told by the mechanic that it has failed the Road Worthy due to this reason and no secondhand ones are available and it will cost me $280 to get another one.

This seems like a pricey solution to a problem the previous owners before me never had.

Is it possible to pick up a cheaper guard somewhere or does someone know of a shop where this sort of modification isnt a issue?

can you maybe get a fender elimanator or will that cause roadworthy issues as well??? for the price of a new fender you could get something that could look heaps better

thats the whole reason there is a problem, I would get on the net & ebay for bike wreckers etc... if none of our members can help out.

Just get a piece of sheet material, aluminium or even colourbond. Fold ot into the right shape to extend the fender to the correct length, trim it to shape, sand around the edges, paint black and rivet the fucker on. Take it for rego, pass and then take it off, a few holes behind the number plate aint gonna kill ya.

Remember it doesn't have to be a genuine part to pass rego as long as it meets regulations I'm sure Gos could fill you in on a few easy rego tricks he has probably pulled over the years.

If I remember the fender has to finish level with a vertical line off the rear edge of the tire, if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will put me right.

The other method is too just find a mechanic who ain't such a tight arse and will just pass the thing. That's what I've done in the past. All about finding the right mechanics

I first rang around to a few wreckers, but the only one i could find is through a place in Sydney.

BUT thanks to the advice on here I think i might have it sorted...

After taking a few pictures down to a couple of different motorcycle shops here in brissy, one mechanic that does his own Road Worthy's told me that he would pass it if i attached any piece of black plastic (eg. kitchen cutting board) to the end of the bike with a reflector (as long as it doesn't look too dodgy). Having done this i took another photo and took it into him and he said 'perfect' and wrote me out my CTP so i can ride it down Monday for the road worthy.


On a side note im also changing to a solo seat rego and was told by the other place i would have to hacksaw/angle grind off the mounts for the passenger foot pegs (the mount for my right hand foot peg is also the bracket for my exhaust) This new mechanic asked me to pop rivet the holes on the mount instead.


I am hoping that all goes well on monday and this hassle of getting a rego is over and done with.

And its a relief to find a mechanic that doesn't mind given a young fella some advice and alternate solutions!
