The 1, 2 and 3 is for towing when you need to hold gears or when something electronic in the trans fails. If you tow with a auto with no external trans cooler, you are asking for trouble. When something does fail it goes into failsafe/limp mode usually into 3rd gear in 'D' (gets stuck in 3rd) then you can still manually select the gear you want with the T bar. Also if the shift solenoids fail, it stops certain upshifts ie 1-2 or 2-3 but then the T Bar allows you to manually select gears, as your using the manual valve in the trans instead of the solenoids.

It wears linkages out, but doubt it will stuff the box. Hope that makes a little sense. ;)

Ohhhhhhhhhhh dear ...........

Ok - the main reasons an auto box will shit the tin :

>lack of service / fluid change (every 60,000km recommended and no I don't give a fuck what the Ford owners manual says! )
>>lack of/incorrect trans fluid (ie Mitsi/Ford in particular)
>>overheated trans ie ABUSE / lack of adequate coooling / lack of adequate trans cooler (ie towing/ High stall convertor equipped etc)
>>failed convertor stator / turbine / sprag / torringtons (shrapnel syndrome)
>>cracked pump housing (common on VR/VS V6 commodores/Lexcen)

ABUSE :
>trying to sit on 90km/hr in 'L/1' normally shit's something.(and yes I towed a woman back in who attepted just this!? )
>Bouncing tacho of it's end stop in 'N' then pulling 'D' not generally recommended
>Towing in convertor lockup/ O/D mode generally not very clever!? :? nor is towing your mates F250 with the wife's TE Magna
> Attempting compression lock ups ie slamming 1st/Reverse at speed ..
etc,etc......

IE; Manual shifting an auto up or down sensibly / using the box for engine braking ie down hill is not really going to cause it to fail providing you use your brains and providing the maintenance has been kept up to it.

Easiest way to keep your auto happy is imagine (like your bike) your car is chain driven - sure it will put up with a fair bit of punishment but if you don't maintain it and/or outright abuse it it will fail sooner or later.

Hope it makes sense mate 8)
