Ubuntu. Its free, will run on beige computers and gets more user friendly with each new version. You can run it from a CD - albeit slowly - and if you like it, click "install". If you don't like it, eject the CD and continue to use shitty windoze.

Nothing wrong with Windaz
It's the fifty five thousand useless programs and add ons and shit people download and NEVER use anyway.
If you have more than one Virus scanner installed it will SLOOOOOOOOOOw your PC right down too.
Some of my dopey customers have three or four running and can't understand why their comps take 11.5 yr's to start up and then be very slow once it has :?
Downloading Music and Movies from Limewire and the like will also fill your PC up with Virus's and Spyware as well
and the best Virus scanner in the World doesn't stop people clicking "OK" when some pop up says "your PC may be infected with Virus's and other Malicious software, do you wish to scan"
Yes People, I am..... fucking sick of my job!!!!!!
Oh well, two whole weeks to get over it :D
Another useful link is "www.fillmycomputerupwithvirus'sandspywareshit.com"

1. It costs money - even if it comes with the computer, you still paid for it and you can't "legally" move it to another one.
2. It does things the micro$haft way - even if you want to do something differently.
3. It is forever trying to phone home to see if you are 'allowed to do that' when you try to do the simplest things.
4. Its the OS everybody loves to hate. Thats why all the virus writers are kept busy. :P

Linux OS' can be hard to learn. I tried several flavours before I settled on Ubuntu.
Windaz 3.1 was hard ... when I got my first computer.
Windaz 95 was even harder, because it was different to 3.1.
Windaz 98 was a little easier and not much different, but I stuck with it for a long time and didn't want to move to
XP - because it would mean learning it all over again. Eventually, I got XP because 98 didn't like the broadband internet connection  so I learned how to drive it. I still have an XP machine in the corner because some vendors still think windose is the ONLY OS on the planet - like the ones who made my crappy GPS.
We have two Ubuntu machines because XP crashed just that one time too many ... I learned to use them.
I'm posting this from my laptop, which came with Vista. I've had it about 6 weeks and it has crashed 4 times already. I use it to browse forums and edit and upload a few photos ... and play freecell.
The next time it freezes while I'm doing nothing more than playing a silly bloody card game - it gets nuked and I get out the Ubuntu disc that I can load onto as many computers as I like. 8)

1. I "legally" move it to new systems all the time (just need to know how)
2. It does things the Microshaft way :? uhm.....that's cause it is Microshaft :D
3.What you talkin bout Willis :?
4.We hate Bill Gates not XP :D

Up to 98 Windows was a pile of shit but my XP has been running on my Custom built (by me) PC for five year's and has NEVER crashed
Rule No 1 .....don't by a generic brand PC especially if it has that absolute shit "VISTA" on it
Laptops you don't have much of a choice :(
Dell,HP,Compaq desktops are crap............
Ever heard of Ghost or Acronis?
All you do when you get a new PC is take an image of the drive and always back up files, then if you get into trouble you simply reformat using the image and in twenty minutes you will be back to a new PC the same as the day you got it :kuda:
If you have Vista with less than 2gb ram you are asking for trouble and get rid of that fucken Kodak easy share software!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. How does a pleb like me - or wobbler - "legally" move an OEM copy to another machine?
2. Vive la resistance!
3. ;)
4. Vive la resistance!

I got to like XP. I locked it down, turned off updates and hid it behind a good firewall and a router ... but eventually there comes a time when it has to be 'updated' to run something new, and the 'update' breaks something that was working perfectly. Or your husband "innocently" clicks on porn and crash goes the computer. ;) I could keep reinstalling it I suppose, but having to re-activate every time is too much like kow towing to the evil emperor. I got a good deal on my Asus laptop with vista from my department store - the same one that sold me the crappy GPS. They told me it came with an XP rollback disc. Stuffed if I know how that works. The best info I can find is that I need to already own a copy of XP and use that. AND I can't put the vista on anything else because its OEM on this laptop alone.
I'm a computer user - not a technician. As such I expect that I shouldn't have to fix it. Regardless, I learned how to fix it. An all purpose repair tool called UBUNTU. :P
Dell make a nice monitor, HP is rubbish and Compaq was passable until HP took it over.
I've heard of Ghost and Acronis. Are they free?
The deal I got included another 2 gig of ram and I don't use easyshare. :D

Just reinstall it on new machine and when it says it has been activated to many times you just ring the number it gives you
and tell the robot on the other end of the line that you have just built a new maching cause the old one blew up and it/he/she
will give you a new activation key.
I can send you both Acronis and Ghost and if you image an already activated version of windows it will not require reactivation
when you reimage :D
They are already getting rid of Vista and replacing with windows Seven. All the Hype is that it's Vista done right, but after using it on a Laptop since it's trial release 5 or 6 weeks ago I would have to say that it's actually fuckter (odd word) than Vista.
They just repackaged it to sell more of the same sorry arse operating System because of the overwhelming resistance to it.

Bill Gates really is "The Biggest Prick" on the face of the Earth :kuda:

You see? I can do all this with Ubuntu without the activation hassles. Funny thing is, the first time I used vista I hated it with a passion. When I got my own it didn't seem to be as bossy and intrusive. :?
Duzzen madda. Next time it takes an unscheduled nap I turn off the life support.

I got a Samsung mp3 player for my birthday and I thought that was sooo cool ... until I plugged it into the Ubuntu computer. It simply didn't recognise it. So I plugged it into the laptop and it wanted all sorts of verifications and synchs and DRM crap. I tried it with XP and it told me it would only talk to media player 10. Mongrels! I dunno why they don't just put micro$haft on the box. So I finally got a couple of mp3s on it so I could try it out. I tried to edit the properties on one so the artist and album would show on the player screen and it wouldn't let me. What a surprise. So I moved it to vista, edited and tried to move it back. Suddenly it 'can't find the device. Mongrels.
But I fixed it. ;) Even the firmware was an upgrade dead end. But thanks to teh interwebz I found out how to trick it into thinking it has an even older version - then 'upgraded' it to one of my choice. Now it speaks linux and does what I want. Vive la resistance. Kill Bill.

You know you've completely kidnapped this thread.

I laugh when I here complaints about Windose not recognising a particular device.
They make Petrol for Car's because Cars use Petrol.
No-one would would be surprised if the BioDiesel they filled up their petrol using car with didn't work
and yet everything they hook up to a PC is supposed to just work
Well surprise surprise, if you hook it up and it doesn't work "it's the device's fault not Windose"
Windose has been around a long time, so if it don't work, it's the cockhead manufacturer of the device that is to blame
I hate you now Daisy because you have me defending Windose and I HATE BILL GATES

Are you using the Beta or RC version? I have tested RC on a few crappy old laptops at work and it is running like a dream!

But slow and wobbly id say you should backup all your data and try a fresh install of XP, Maybe an upgrade of ram or if you want for around 50-100 or a new PC there are some half decent towers only floating around on websites or even your local computer shops for around $500 - $600
I use www.macotechnology.com.au or www.eyo.com.au both sydney sites, not sure of any good melbourne ones, but shipping shouldnt be to much diffence either

I was using the RC but gave it a miss after a few weeks......to much like Vista for my liking.
I can get 2 gig of ram for $25 DDR2 or two gig of DDR1 for $70
Wobbly started this train and then bailed out!

You know what finally convinced me to use Ubuntu over not only windaz, but all the other Linuxes? EVERYTHING works! When I installed it all the hardware was located and drivers installed. The only thing I had to do was allow it to use 'restricted drivers' to run the nvidia graphics card. I put a CD or a DVD in the drive and it just plays. I click on a .doc or .xls file and it opens. It plays mp4. Try doing that with windaz. Won't happen - you need to install other programs and codecs.
I'm told by the Mac fanbois that the glowing fruit company products do this too - BUT it isn't free and you are still locked into their hardware.
