Is there interference on your wireless network from another device or are you just trying to optimise/increase signal strength of the network? If you're trying to increase signal strength, try moving the modem to a more direct path to each device. The more obstacles the signal has to go through (especially things like microwaves, fridges, walls, anywhere that has a reasonable sort of electromagnetic field), the weaker and less reliable the service will be, especially for interweb use. If there is something interfering with the network and you know what the device(s) is that is causing it (cordless phone, baby monitor, bluetooth devices etc), try and find out the channel that it runs on too and set the router to at least 4 channels from it. As there are only 11 channels in the 2.4ghz band, they do overlap, so the farther away each device is from the other, the better off you will be. Remember though, that your neighbours will be using wireless devices as well, so the interference could be coming from outside your house. You can also change the setting on your router via the laptops as the only thing that will change is the channel the router broadcasts on, not any setting on your computers. The computers will automatically find any wireless network in range, regardless of what channel it is on. When you have changed the channel on the router and hit apply, it should restart (or ask you to) the router, drop the network and come on again. At that point the computers will reacquire the connection and away you go.

if its an older router, no, you cannot change the frequency from the 2.4ghz range.

if you have a newer router, and newer wireless cards, you can use the 5.8ghz range,(or wireless n as its referred to).

but yes, changing the channel could fix it. the main issue you will find here is that most devices that cause interference will be spread over up to 6 channels, so picking a good one is pretty hard to do

I'm in a situation where my av sender that I use for my foxtel to be sent to another room is the same 2.4GHz as the wireless router, and the 5.8GHz is what we have for our wireless phone. So I'm farked if I know... It will take someone who knows what they are doing to fix this not me fuckin up everyones suggestions...
