I found that the 12 was really great down low and actually felt (power/torque-wise) very similar to the VTR down low but without the attitude. The extra top end is a great bonus but I think I'd need to open up the noise stakes a little to really get the sensation of speed.I was in a similar predicament to you. I had a 1998 Firestorm, and loved it for all it's low down gut wrenching torque. However the longer rides became a bit annoying due to the v twin character (vibration). So I went looking around. The ZX-12R has max torque of 134 nm at 7500 (the firestorm 0f 97nm at 7000). The 12R has max hp at 10500 (Firestorm at 9000) so in reality they are not too disimilar with a relatively broad spread of power. As a result you'll find the 12R more tractable to live with on a daily basis (as it seems you ride on a daily basis).
Your apparent disappointment with the 12R not going as hard as you think, I believe is due to a number of issues. Firstly the Storm has a beautiful V twin rumble that turns into a firebreathing roar. If you are doing over 150km/h - you know it due to this thunderous rapture. Comparatively the 12R is like a stealth fighter - silent and the only time you know about the speed is when you look down to see your speedo and think, f$%^ that's too fast!
The Storm has a small fairing, and gives plenty of "feedback" (buffetting) from the headwind - again making my rides a little more tiring. The 12R is fully faired, and slips through the wind more easily.
Don't get me wrong - the VTR is a GREAT road bike and I still miss mine a bit. But I think you are really dismissing a 12R too easily - as it is a FANTASTIC road bike.
Good luck wih your test rides and whatever you choose - enjoy it, after all it's just a motorbike!
Some people bag the Busa for handling but I guess you can't say until you've ridden it so I'll reserve judgement. It's got semi-modern suspension and brakes so it can't be too bad.So sayeth the Man !! and I agree 110% - the 10 is a great *quick* bike, but a bit *nervous* and *twitchy* on anything other than really smooth roads............and the 'Bus
Good luck mate - ps, the deal with Yamaha is a crock, I wanted a MT1 *really* badly, and the pricks at Action wouldn't even start the 1 model they had - wanted a *huge* deposit as well..........get fcuked, I put a rocket up the Yamaha Oz site, its a bloody joke really - I guess they are pretty comfortable with sales figures......
Don't worry, it saw plenty of time up around the 10k mark, just didn't give the attitude I was expecting - makes for a fantastic road bike though. I gave the VTR a hit the other day down south and had a bit of a slap, then madfab did the same in front of me and no slapping to be seen so they look a good package!Shifty, rev that 12R to 10k (optimum. Genuine 170rwhp))mate then tell us it wasn't arm pulling, it too is a proven busa killer it missed out on the cult status the Busa got because KHI marketed its release wrongly.
(BTW you wont have a chance to look at the dials you will be too busy keeping yourself on the bike).
The 10 and the 12 have simular HP different weight and torque and are completely different machines for different type of riding.
Go 12R for long rides and general stuff and 10R for the weekend blat, trackwork and just an insane good time all the time

If I had the money I would have both. Go try a Blackbudgie too so you know how good it was 5 years ago, it and the busa are old tech. At least the 12R was updated through the years.
I was just amazed at how so completely rideable it was. It will take me a while to learn the power characteristics of a big four but the low-down torque is familiar so that's a good start.Good work. The 12R will teach some things kindly

The VTR is certainly no slouch as a road bike, if I feel the need I can keep up with most people through the twisties without pushing *too* hard... always wanted a V-Twin so I've been there & done that now, I can look to get something else. Realistically not looking until mid-year as I've got a Phillip Island trip shortly and that will eat a huge amount of money (three services and two sets of tyres in a month and I'll be due for a chain & sprockets when I get back).mate....
shifty- i hear wot ur saying..and i agree with the other post abt the noise..when i went from the 110hp VTR to the 135hp blade at first i didnt realise the diff...till i looked at the speedo..being noisy & vibrating a lot makes u think ur going a whole lot faster...
my blade pulls wot id consider "pretty well"..i have no trouble skinning brand new 600's (nor should i with 300cc more..but my bike is 6 yrs old)...tho i have also changed gearing (& now the bitch wheelies like a mongrel bastard dog on heat)....
ill also say that after riding my blade for a month i realised how much better it is than a VTR..handles better, accelerates quicker..and it has almost pulled my shoulders out a few times...
now the relevant bit...i rode the zx10r....comparing a 00 929cc blade to a 05 zx10r, similar bikes (inline 4)..ill tell u now..the 10 is quiter than mine (stock can i think)....but dont kid urself...id give up a kidney for a zx10r (hey theres an idea for sum extra $$??)
the 10 is farking awesome....havent ridden a new blade tho, but apparently (Dmitri now has one, has had 954, and 929) the current 1000 is better than the 929...

Well that's what surprised me. I had a good run on each (probably 8-10km on the 12R, and 4-5km on the CBR1000) and I thought that's have been enough. The CBR felt notably faster but it was a lot louder and less refined in every respect, so I'd say that's the difference between the two.Maybe the little test rides are.nt going to do the bikes justice Shifty.
