I have no idea either way they may have thought they should get a reward so they took only a $20. I would have offered more

I had much the same experience, hopped in a cab and said 'Werribee'.
The guy (Afghani) pulls off in a hurry and heads down Kings Way. This is was a bit odd, the cabbies used to swing onto the Westgate via Flinders Street and Charles Grimes bridge. Anyway, this guy goes like a bat out of hell down Kings Way and just as he's about to swing onto Queens Road I said "How 
exactly are you getting to Werribee from here?". Thence followed a look of intense panic, followed by the admission that he thought Werribee was in fact down near Moorabin, and now he had no idea.
You'd think they'd have some basic idea of WTF suburb is where wouldn't you...?
