Actually the $50 levy has been doing some good albeit not a lot of it visible and yes a lot of it has been spent on roadworks but the reality is that these roadworks do affect motorcycles and would be so far down the list in priority without the levy that we wouldn never see them get done...

There has been 3 motorcycle specific forums in Vic this year thus far facilitated by the VACC and VMAC are starting to show some nuggets in regards to the spending of the levy now, there is moves afoot to susidise rider training from that levy but I can't confirm anyhing yet, just know there are discussions ongoing so the levy whilst grossy prejudiced is at least doing motorcyclists some good...

On second read this morning ,I am glad that Mr Stuart Strickland is representing motorcycling industry.

I cant believe the government has allocated this $72 million on Pushies.

There so much political bullshit about these days,Yet here we are in 2006 and motorcyclist are still been mistreated/missingterpreted by pen pushers

I think the issue is why not more spending on motorcycle promotion and infrastructure. I use both motorbikes and bicycles for transpport and recreation and I think the 72 mil is overdue. The bicycle lobby has successfully persuaded the government after years of lobbying of their message - look at bicycle victoria as a model lobby group and events like the great victorian bike ride and the Around the bay in a day as ways of involving the larger community. Time for the motorbike community to do the same, rather than shooting the successful bike boys.

the Bike Vic people have the goods on the Vic pollies

Bicycle victoria has (last I heard) 22000 members, that's a fair chunk of clout when you compare that with say the MRA who is the peak politicial body for motorcycling and has numbers far less than that.

Numbers = votes and that means pollies sit up and take notice. <rant> If the motorcycle community got behind their reps like the pushbike industry their lobbying voice would be louder and perhaps heard with some respect. </rant>

Yeh, not to mention the nerve of them funding the building of child care centres. It's not like toddlers pay taxes...

Rego and license fees aren't for upkeep of roads; they're a fee you pay to use the roads such as they might be. The money goes into general revenue.

How much money do you suppose Honda MPE or even Kwaka Australia make in a year compared to every bikeshop in the country?

Cyclists don't have a corporate presence behind them. If they want to be noticed, they have to whinge to the government and extract false promises from them.

Motorcyclists, on the other hand...

Why isn't there a racetrack out there owned by someone like Honda MPE? Why doesn't Yamaha Australia shell out the half a million dollars Lyndon Heffernan's asking for his motocross park in Batemans Bay?

The motorcycle industry has the capital to engage in those sorts of activities on its own, without relying on government to help. They'd be raising the profile of the sector of the economy they do business in and they'd be creating more business for themselves as the general public gets drawn in...

Why don't they do that?

Phillip Island changed hands for $10 million a couple of years ago. Why was is left to Lindsay Fox to buy it?

there are 275,000 adults with mudderboike licences in Vic
and about 100,000 road registered bikes

and their answer to MRA or VMAC when stuff for bikes gets pushed??

In Holland scooters are allowed to travel on cyclepaths... Recently they have been taxed out of existance, but a few years ago there were litterally millions of them, that means millions of cars less on the roads....

In Auckland motorcycles are allowed to travel in bus lanes which are everywhere...

I don't have issues with them spending some money on Bicycles, But $72million, Feck that's alot of coin for something that doesn't get charged rego/levy/licence or pay the fuel excise that is supposed to be spent on roads.

Why $72 & not $7.2million? Where's it all go????

Actually Child care centres tend to be VERY PROFITABLE, just look at Eddy's new Ferrari! Parents pay for childcare & in some cases there employer pays for it. Certainly not a $72 million handout.....

personally i dont really like the idea of only needing a car licence to ride a 50cc scooter... but then if there isnt any real increase in accidents/fatalities for states that allow it compared to states that dont allow it, then maybe its not so bad...


either way, what it really sounds like to me is that Mr Honda isnt very happy that its not selling enough 50cc scooters in Victoria
