It's estimated that road fatalities cost approximatley 1.6 million dollars per death. That's from the moment the ambulance is dispatched and includes medical costs, insurance costs etc.
Considering 1635 people died on our roads last year, that's an awful lot of money!
But it's not just the monetary side of things that need to be considered. Human life is not replaceable.
Personally I can't see the sense in this current method of "policing". I guess if enough people get booked, they'll tell their mates that they got done and they never saw the camera and that might be enough to slow other people down. Putting more coppers in the hills to form a visible presence is a better option, but Police resources are scarce enough as it is.
Given the cost of crashes to the community, you simply can't take away the role of the traffic officer. It's all well and good to say that they should be out catching real criminals, but most of the real criminals aren't taking away innocent lives and costing the community billions of dollars each year.
I'm not about to put my hand up and say I have the answer. Speed isn't always the problem, but those who say it isn't a factor have their heads up their arse.
At the end of the day, crashes happen. Not accidents... crashes. An accident is something that just happens. Crashes are caused by inattention, speed, not driving to the conditions, fatigue etc. All things that can be avoided.
I'd suggest that instead of bitching about being busted for doing the wrong thing, that everyone start taking responsibility for their actions. I keep on harping on about this, and sounding like I'm some government parrot, but it's just the way I see things.
If we knew that we could get away with being 15 over, then everyone would be driving around at 15 over. The enforcement of speed limits needs to start somewhere. In SA you'll likely get done at 8 over. Pretty fair I should think.
If you want the adrenaline rush that speed provides, take it to a track. It's cheaper and there's no cows.
Better start saving i guess.
So they don't need to put any signage up after? Also what are the kmph brackets? is it 1-15kmph over, then 16-29kmph? I can't find any info for brackets and penalty through google or on the sa police site.
