I think the point about learning to ride better is about spending your money on riding courses to develop your skills correctly, rather than just riding more. The better you can corner, the faster your exit speed will be, which will give you better speed along the straights than any mod you are thinking of doing to the bike. So save your pennies and spend them where they'll make the biggest difference, on your ability.
The other thing you can do to improve acceleration is lose 20kg.

Have a look through this US 'Ninja 250' site. Some helpful tips, but HP for $$, the ZZR isn't an ideal base.

It's only a 250 and no one takes them seriously, unless they go flying around you on the outside...

How to go faster in a straight line on any Road bike :
1. Obtain open class licence
2. Buy bigger / faster bike
3. Rotate right grip to stop whilst clicking right foot operated lever upwards at regular intervals.

- Apt I think!?

While I agree with Mike , I am not sure about this mod tho
Some Head work would be the way to go , flowed with bigger valves . A rebore with some pistons to match the head work . Maybe get new bearings put through the bottom end to cope with the extra 5 yo 10 hp . A couple of smoothbore carbs and a pipe and away you go
A well sorted turbo kit could release the beast too .
Nothing is impossible , there was a GS 400 at the Island Classic doing 2:03s and nice and reliable too .
He had probably only spent 10 to 20 grand on it too .

Get onto this and then start saving for a bigger bike . And pay heed to what has been said about riding skill improvement .

Never noticed how almost all sports bikes have a 4-into-1 and most tourers have a 4-into-2 - it's about back pressures and when in the rev range the power is produced. If you simply want to go fast you beef up the top end at the expense of the mid range. Even sports bikes with 2 silencers tend to have a 4-into-1-into-2. It would be a very different scinario with those little 2 smokes you play with tho Billy

My Z has a 4 into 2 and that isn't classed a tourer, but a sports naked

Truthfully though, i think a chilli fart under a wet blanket would have more backpressure than a zzr250.

4 to 1 gives top end
4 2 1 gives better midrange
hence why sports bikes go that way
OP as mentioned a sprocket change is the cheapest way to go
tyre pressures and decent tyres for corners
chain clean and lube/adjust makes HP even more important when you dont get much to start with
proper service , carb balance makes a big difference to bottom end and response
as others have mentioned rider training is important , even more important for you now before you step up to a bigger bike , ride this bike well and the skills will be good for when you step up

Ferkristssake, somebody's gotta say it - a zzr250 is a parallel twin - yes, 2 cylinders - no way to install a 4-2-1 on a 2 cylinder. Try a 2 into 1 perhaps.

LOL I was waiting for that! .. I kept wondering - what is nobody going to mention that fact that a 4-1 or 4-2-1 is still doing to have 2 dangling header pipes doing nothing??

i suppose you could use one of the new 250r exhausts as long as you could mount the can(i don't reakky know how they do it on them)possibly even an aftermarket can for them, there has to be something out there!!!

If mounting it is a bit of an issue, assuming the new muffler isn't mounted way too far away from the original mounting point and its just a matter of lining up the holes i guess getting a muffler strap and lining that up to mount it isn't too far out of the equation. So that being said, check one of the new bikes out and see how high their can is compared to yours.

i have noticed that they do sit alot higher, but who cares!! you cant have anybody on the back yet so just take the rear pegs and brackets off and make your own. Oh and had a -1 (13 tooth) sproket on my gpx, not much difference between the 13 & 14, i have the 14 on now and feel its alot better. the amount you gain on the -1 is not going to give anybody an edge.
