An un-named mate of mine (in his 20s) wrote off his R6 and all of his gear.
Got an R1 with the insurance money, and wrote it and the new gear off a week later!
Can't insure a road bike anymore.... brought an Aprilla Trackie with the insurance money
But my at fault claims is a little rear ender I had when driving a truck. Not much damage, about 2k worth, realistically about 1k worth but because it was through insurance you know what these repairers are like. And a smash on a GS500F, about 3K damage. No write offs or gear claims. I think my high premium is mostly because I'm under 30 and it's a 1000cc bike.
This fella you're talking about wouldn't happen to work at MCAS would he?
Why yes sir

small world....

There's no way I'll pay 5k full comprehensive. I will definitely get 3rd party property though, I reckon everyone should have it. I'll just have to go without full comp. and hope for the best. Unless I can put it in another persons name. Can you put it in someone's name that doesn't have a motorcycle license and just be listed as a nominated rider?
The money I save from not getting full comp. will go towards a track bike and all track associated costs.

I'd say its more likely to be "little to no experience on a 1000cc machine" that has caused this premium to be quoted as it has. If you had 5-10 years experience it would be cheaper - even under 30.
A 600 may be a little cheaper but I'd guess a supersport bike - regardless of capacity - will attract a higher premium. Hence why I ride an old slow bike - or two

You could be right. It's just one of those online quotes though so riding history isn't exactly specified.
Might force me to settle for a gixxer 750 as its a fair bit cheaper. At least untill I can get an R1 insured for a decent price.

Damn! That's cheap.
How much was the bike valued at and how long ago was this?
I listed the R1's value as 20k.

It's your call Clay but there's no way I'd consider riding/driving something newish without full comp. There's a reason it's priced high and that is because they think you're a fair chance of snotting yourself on it. I'd maybe listen to the little voices and think about something different. I know most think insurance companies are arseholes but when it comes to identifying risk they are pretty good at it. Perhaps look at a different model or older model so you're not insuring for quite so much.
You won't be able to put it in someone elses name though, they are awake to that one, particularly with bikes.
Good luck

Love the look of the R1, completely different to all the other litre bikes. The front end looks mad, the pipes under the tail, though I'd probably get akras for it to slim down the rear end a bit. The 3 different mapping modes appeal to me, can't believe the zx10r doesn't have it. And the engine of course, it's like 2 in 1. Only reason I wouldn't get the R1 is if its just too big for me to go straight to, in which case I'd get the gixxer because it's the only bike that offers a 750 and I don't want a 6.
The previous model zx10r was a really nice looking bike, but I don't like the new one.
The other thing I noticed was that the overall quality of yamaha and honda seem to be a level above the kwakas and even suzuki, just when looking closely at the bikes it seems that way to me. Little things like the dash and finish of certain areas. But the new honda is ugly as with the flat front end, the 07 model was hot.
I like the triumph daytona 675, its a sweet looking bike too, but don't know how I'd like a triple and besides its British, not jap.

Clay, can I just ask why you dont want a 600

Have you ridden one?
BTW, the 675 is comparative to the other 600's, better midrange - slightly less top end. Dunno bout you but I rarly use the top end on any bike on the road. So as a road bike they are a weapon - even on wet roads in the middle of nowhere....eh Rod

It could be. It's also likely that it's because of your licence suspension. In fact, it'll be a combo of the years you've had a motorbike licence, the type of bike and your driving record.
Compare this: I had a 1 month suspension (136 km/hr in a 110 zone = automatic suspension), and no other claims, incidents or licence infringements at all, riding a ZX6. I was paying more than half again (but not quite double) what Dave was paying for a ZX9
with 2 at-fault claims against him (so bigger bike, same age group, multiple claims vs. zero claims, but the suspension trumped all of that).
The word "suspension" is a flashing neon sign for insurers. And the suspension affects your insurance for up to 6 or 7 years afterwards. I'm on my last policy that will be affected by the suspension and looking forward to having my premium drop... although, now that I've just made my first at-fault claim, it probably won't

Damn sexiest non 1000cc bike going.... I would have a black one in a flash if I didnt love the 636 so much.
As for not wanting a 600 well that just cuts out so many potential options, but I suppose your mates have litre bikes so you would need one too

Phil, I plan on doing a fair few trips to North Qld and South Vic on the bike and reckon a 1000 will be better suited to this sort of riding. Plus I will prefer the torque of a litre compared to a 6. From what people are telling me I'll have more fun on a 6 doing laps of the Old Road and shit like that. But I reckon I'll have plenty of fun doing that on a 1000 too. And seeing the 750 is only like 2kg heavier than the 6, I can't see why it wouldn't be just as easy to throw around.
And Rob, not really. What the zx6r, gsxr600 and cbr600? There's just as many litre options, including the z1000 which is a sweeeeet looking bike! And I think I know just as many people with sixes, if not more. If anything I'd rather have what my mates don't than what they do. Everyone seems to copy these days. How many here have the same bikes? Though you'd expect nothing less, being a kwaka club.

When it comes down to it, you don't need to justify your decision to buy the bike you choose, good luck with it all mate.....

True, Im just interested in clays thoughts about a big bore bike nothing more nothing less.
Side note..theres nothing like trying to justify my decesions to the wife/s.... why I needed another bike more than 35 times

incorrigible
