zxr750 vs zx9??
hi all,
i'm a newbie here (1st post & all)
now, considering buying myself a toy now i have pretty much murdered the mortgage.
few years ago i took a zxr for a spin & liked it, so my first choice was to find a zxr j1 - (seems to be a few cheapies around). having spoken to a few people they also suggested i should check out the zx9. haveing never really considered them i'm open to suggestions - anyone ever owned/ridden both ther bikes?
ideas??
for some reason i'm attracted to the twin headlight styling of the zxr/7 & the later zx9, but have heard nasty things being mentioned about the zxr h1 & j1's rear suspension (possibly fixed by fitting shock from a later model?)
thanks

All depends what you want T
Something that handles or one that goes like a cut cat ??
The 7 will teach you a HELL of a lot more about handling.
Look at the 7 as a learning a guitar, it will be a brill' stepping stone to anything...
And yeah the early 9's like to light the back up....

Hey T
I bought a brand new zxr750 L2 1994 model and I had it for about 4 years and 50,000kms. I still rate it as the best bike that I have owned ( I've owned a 98 GSXR750, 929 blade and 05 zx6r). The thing stuck to the road like glue. I loved it. I had no problems with it. I rode it daily to work 70kms round trip, fanged it at arthurs seat, did track days, rode long distances to queensland two up etc etc. I recommend you buy a tank bag for longer trips to give your wrist a break though cause it gets uncomfortable.
My old man had a 95 zx9r which I rode quite often as well. Great power, more comfortable but prolly not as planted and confidence inspiring as the zxr.
I enjoyed riding both bikes but i recon the zxr looks more sporty and is a lot more fun to ride.
either one will make you a happy man, man.
Cheers

Re: zxr750 vs zx9??
It all depends on what you want it for. Both bikes are weighty. The earlier 9's being a little more comfy than a ZXR. The ZX9 in B1 or B2 is not the best bike but has loads of power. The earlier ZXR750's did have a harsh rear shock. But it's not the shock, it is the link. There are readily available aftermarket conversions for sale on the web.T) wrote:hi all,

The early ZXR750's are reliable if a little underpowered. They have great front end feel, and are extremely stable as are most kwakas from that era. The 9 will have a similiar front end, but it tends to spin up the rear rather early on the track. It never becomes an issue on the road, but apparently Kawasaki got the swingarm position wrong on it in the design process.

so you guys are suggesting a later zx9 over the zxr as it's you consider it a bit more comfy & better all rounder?
consider me a tightass - i'm already turned down a '94 (L1?) zxr with mechanical damage (ask was $3500, unreg)
looking for a roughish j1 that i can rebuild for somewhere around $2500. once i've finished with that i may consider spending $8k-ish on a decent zx7 or zx9

i would dare say that $3500 for a damaged, unregistered 1994 zxr is daylight robbery
my 1998 C model 9R was just on 3k from the auctions with a full akra system, new wave discs, braided lines, 26k on the clock... had very minor damage, broken peg bracket, one leaking engine cover, few small repairable cracks in the front fairing and a few scuffs
they go really cheap at the auctions usually, as most people dont rate them... all the morons willing to pay market value for a damaged bike with no rego or rwc that needs a $330 VIV cert only bid on R1's and gsxr1000's
