hi all,
i gotta ask cause my mate who is coming wth me to motogp is shithouse as a navigator.
Anyway, i am staying on exhibition street in melb cbd.
To get to philip island i understand i have to get onto the monash freeway?
now here is the big question......do i need one of those etag things?
i havnt been to melb in like 6 years and when i did come there it was only in suburbs.
I really would appreciate some honest directions and advice. And b4 you all ask, yes i do have a map but sometimes a helping hand from someone who knows is better.
Thanks
The Roc
ps i am sure this question is on the minds of many other newbies going to th island for their first time.
Oh are there stationary speed cameras on the way?
Forgive the newbie question but i dont wanna be rootin about all sunday tryin to find the island.

I can help you with the e-tag part (from my road trip to Vic last year)...bikes don't pay tolls on freeways in Vic, so nothing to worry about there

There are farkin big signs on the freeway showing the direction to PI, go to a shell servo and get a day/weekend e-tag pass, plus there are likely to be speed cameras set up over the entire weekend.
cheers

I've lost count of how many times I've been to Phillip Island. We get lost EVERY year!

By car
To get to Phillip Island by car, travel along the Monash Freeway from Melbourne and take the exit to Phillip Island (near Cranbourne) along the South Gippsland Highway (M420). Continue to follow the signs for Phillip Island onto the Bass Highway (A420). At the Anderson roundabout, turn right onto the Phillip Island Tourist Road (B420), travelling over the bridge at San Remo onto the island.
thank god for google

Just remember to take your time, watch out for bikes and wave to the kids on the side of the roads.

For those who don't know this bit, you have to turn left off the Monash to get to the South Gippsland Highway to get to Cranbourne.. If you keep going straight you'll end up heading east on the Princes Hwy/Fwy and go through Berwick/Pakenham etc. (If you do head out this way, look for the signs pointing to Kooweerup, and go there (it's more or less back on the Sth Gippy).)
There's big signs all the way though - you should be OK.
If you're driving from the CBD, the easiest way is to get a day pass (as mentioned by SenNey get them online or through a Shell servo) for the tollway.
