Does anyone know what's involved in getting a bike going that has no key.
I have been looking at salvage auctions for a bike to turn into a track weapon. Have come across a few without keys. One in particular is a 2005 ZX10 that is to be auctioned on 16 jan.
I've heard you need a new lock barrel and a new ECU. Any help would be appreciated.

As far as I know that is correct once you loose your keys new ecu unless there is something the dealers can look up.

they come with 2 black keys and a red key
the red key is to program
if you dont have the red key then there is nothing you can do , you will have to replace the ecu and lockset

heard the local dealer tell a customer yesterday on a 05 ZX10R that if you loose the red key its like $4000 to get it all sorted out.
This was a salesman talking BTW.
Joys of having an older bike.
Take the barrel down to the local locksmith, $58 later two keys and away you go.

I was lucky enough to get all three keys for my bike when I got it from the salvage auctions

Sent an email off to Kawasaki today to see what the situation is with them.
Also figured I could chase down the owner of the bike through the RTA and hope they still had keys. Don't know how I'd go with the privacy issue there though.
Would an aftermarket ECU do the job or do these piggy back onto the original one?

as far as im aware, things like the pc3 piggyback onto the OEM efi unit and just modify the signals going in & out to suit what you want.

anything can be done with wiring mate...
if you can get it wired to 2 switches.. on and off, and the programing key obviously activates a different wire or 2..
but you'd have to trace your wiring and know what you need to do, but i'm sure it could be done given the time effort and electrical knowledge.. you must be abe to by pass the imobiliser and remove it completely...
