NIETO TAKES SENSATIONAL SUPERPOLE WIN
Eurospeedway Lausitz, Germany, 8 September 2007 - Fonsi Nieto (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse Ninja ZX-10R) chose a successful Superpole strategy to secure his first ever SBK pole position, and in a great day for the Kawasaki riders Regis Laconi (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse Ninja ZX-10R) took second best time.
With the ‘wet’ Superpole rules in place, due to wet weather marring most of the second day of qualifying, the 50-minute session started out with a largely dry track surface and most riders running slicks. Nieto could sense the rains coming and decided to make a quick exit from pitlane, getting out fastest and first, and he managed to get his ZX-10R across the line just before the rains came back with real vengeance. Hence his best time was almost four seconds faster than his team-mate Laconi, who made the best job possible after half the track suddenly became drenched in rain water.

The rains came and went throughout the session, but the notoriously slick Lausitz track surface remained wet throughout, and many of the top 16 riders fell trying to improve their times.

Kawasaki’s perfect 1-2 performance was an assured display of using the conditions to best advantage, and with unsettled weather predicted for raceday, with a real chance of additional rain, more intelligent thinking may have to be done before racing starts for real.

Fonsi Nieto: “I knew it was going to rain and there are times when you have to make up for in your head that you do not have in the set-up of the bike. I had the bike in gear and ready to go and as soon as I saw the lights start to change I made almost a full racing start just to get clear of everyone else. Three quarters of the way through the my first flying lap it started to rain but when I completed the lap I knew I would be on pole, because all the riders behind would have had to ride on more wet tarmac than me.”

Regis Laconi: “I am quite satisfied with that result and I also used a slick tyre, like Fonsi. The plan was to get a quick start and try to beat the rain but halfway around my lap I felt spots of rain on my visor. I pushed as hard as I could on the first part of the flying lap but them I had a slide from the rear so I had to slow down a bit. I hope it will be dry for tomorrow as we have a good set-up for that, so we will have to wait and see.”

RAIN STOPS PLAY FOR RIBA AND FORET
Eurospeedway Lausitz, Germany, 8 September 2007 - With the second qualifying session proving to be wet at Eurospeedway Lausitz Pere Riba (GIL Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R) and Fabien Foret (Gil Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R) were deprived of a second chance to improve their qualifying positions from day one.
Thanks to their times in the first dry qualifying session, Riba will now line up on row three for the race, after scoring 12th best laptime, while Foret now has to start from 18th place on the grid.

On day one Foret found some difficulties in the timed session and ran out of time to make a more competitive lap, while Riba was still working on finding his best machine set-up as day one drew to a close. Neither rider set a time on the treacherous surface in the second qualifying session, judging it too much of a gamble because of the risk of crashing. They contented themselves with a few wet laps in the second free session, just to find a base setting if raceday proves to be wet.

Pere Riba: “We did some work yesterday to get ready for a better push in qualifying today but we didn’t get the chance. Not such a great weekend so far but I hope we can get away well tomorrow. The track was so slippery today that it was going to be impossible to find out anything meaningful in the timed session.”

Fabien Foret: “We had a little bit of difficulty yesterday and that held us back for a time and then today the track was so bad we decided not to run this afternoon. There was no way to improve the time so we decided not to even go out for the second timed session. The tarmac is so black here that in the wet you cannot really see where to point the bike to avoid the rubber put down by the cars. I am not sure what will happen with the weather on raceday but we will be trying as hard as we always do.”

STRONG SCORES FOR KAWASAKI’S FRONT ROW STARTERS
Eurospeedway Lausitz, Germany, 9 September 2007 - Superpole winner Fonsi Nieto (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse Ninja ZX-10R) and second fastest qualifier Regis Laconi (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse Ninja ZX-10R) each started from enviable positions in Germany, and scored good points in each 24-lap race, which were held in mercifully dry conditions.
In race one Laconi was highest finisher for the team, in sixth place, just one up on Nieto. The race was won by Noriyuki Haga, by 11 seconds from Max Biaggi.

In the second race, Nieto stuck to his task well and finished eighth, while Laconi was 11th. Bayliss won the second contest, from Haga.

Their points from Lausitz mean that Laconi moves up to 11th in the rankings, having also made a breakthrough in his suspension settings this weekend. Nieto is 13th overall, unchanged from the start of the Lausitz race.

Regis Laconi: “Considering this morning’s warm up I thought things might not be so great. We had the same chattering as always but thanks to Öhlins’ support we made some modifications and things really changed. The bike became easier to manage and I kept a good race pace. It’s a pity that I made not such a good start to race one, and I lost some places, so maybe it could even have been a fourth position. Then I began to gain positions and I found a good race pace until the end.”

Fonsi Nieto: “It feels like a difficult week end despite my first pole position in SBK. Reaching seventh and the eighth after starting in front of all the others is not what I wanted but I had some electrical problems in race one which made me lose four positions on the straight in just a single lap. I still got good results. We solved these problems for race two but the bike was quite difficult to manage and that tired me out. For the overall team, the weekend has been positive one, especially with Regis’ results also being good.”

TOUGH DAY FOR FORET AND RIBA
Eurospeedway Lausitz, Germany, 9 September 2007 - Fabien Foret (Gil Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R) kept his second place in the WSS championship rankings today, despite being unable to finish the 23-lap Eurospeedway Lausitz race.
Pere Riba (GIL Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R) experienced similar problems to his team-mate, severe chatter from the rear, and that negated his push for championship points, as he finished 17th. He also experienced premature rear tyre wear and that also slowed his overall progress.

Despite moving forward at good pace in the early laps, and being as high as 11th from an 18th place start, Foret found problems so severe that he had to pull in on lap 17. The rear tyre moved on the wheel rim, and from that point on he dropped back, eventually coming in to the pits and retiring.

Foret is second on 126 points; Riba is 15th in the rankings, with 37 points.

Fabien Foret: “We suffered a lot from the lack of dry track time and that did not help us on raceday. I moved forward in the race at the start but then, when the rear grip was reduced and the tyre spun on the rim, it became too difficult.”

Pere Riba: “I had a lot of chatter from the rear and my tyre is just finished. It is hard to say if it is simply a problem for our lack of dry track time or the tyre choice we used but it was impossible to make more than we did.”

NEBEL IN THE POINTS FOR LIGHTSPEED KAWASAKI
Eurospeedway Lausitz, Germany, 9 September 2007 - Stefan Nebel (Lightspeed Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R) scored a point in his first ever WSS race for the team at his home circuit of Eurospeedway Lausitz.
After starting from 26th place on the grid, after second qualifying was disrupted by rain, he overcame a less than perfect start and soon made up ground on his opponents. Even when his rear tyre started to slide, he was able to continue at a high pace to the end of the 23 laps.

Nebel is in line to race in the last two rounds of the year, at Vallelunga and Magny-Cours.

Stefan Nebel: “That was really good fun, and quite hard work as well! I didn’t get such a great start, even though my practice starts were good, because we put a new clutch in for the race and the adjustment was not the same. But afterwards I found a good rhythm, even though I only had one hour in the dry with this bike. I needed to learn a lot in the first couple of laps. After ten or 11 laps I saw a lot of guys were having problems with their tyre, and our bike was set-up well for older tyres - so I could still push very hard at the end. With a little bit more 'Superbike' riding style near the end it was all OK. To get a point was good first time out and I am looking forward to riding the machine again.”

Was a good photo op, Aparrantly Fonz parked sideways acroos pit exit until the rain was close enough for him to get the only dry lap of whole Superpole.
Clever bugger, Jamie Hacking is doing heaps better in the AMA got a third behind World domination Mladin/Spies last round.
