Hi all,

I don't know anything much about motorbikes. I've learnt very basic riding skills on a friends AG bike.

For a long time I've thought it'd be great to get a bike and now I've been offered a GPX250 with 7XXXXXkm with no history etc for $500.

I understand that at minimum the cam chain, and tyres would need replacing as it's been sitting unused for a few years (3).
What are decent tyres worth?
And cam chain - is it an expensive job to get done?

Cheers
Rohan

Forgot to mention... It needs a new ignition. At the moment it will turn with just about anything that will fit inside. These easy to get? expensive?

As dodgy as this sounds. Its ligit. I've checked the Vin etc.

70 odd thousand km's is quite a few, but the parallel twin GPX engine may well still be going strong if it's been well looked after. Having said that, by the time you add tyres, get the cam chain done and register it the bike's going to owe you >$1500 and still only be worth $500. I'd keep saving your pennies and buy one that registered, running and probably only has 30 thousand km's on the clock.

i know of one gpx250 that got over 150kkm without a camchain being replaced, then again he was super anal about the oil and replaced it religeously every 3kkm and kept everything to the book servicewise. Replacing the camchain may be a good idea though as that is one of the biggest unknowns, and from that point onwards, just keep to the schedule and maintain the thing like the primadonna engine it likes to be treated as :D.

Prima donna engine Mike? You've got to be kidding aren't you. Those engines take a licking and keep on kicking mate, they're almost indestructible.

What i meant is i know they can handle being used and abused with the best of them and last relatively well, but if very well looked after they last for ages. :)
