Cam chain rattle/noise - 98 ZX-6R

Took my 98 ZX-6R fighter to the mechanic to get the tuning looked at (it's running very rich I think) but he was more concerned about a nasty noise coming from the camchain cover. When revving the engine, at about 5 grand it starts making a loud kssshhh-like sound. Guy I bought if from said he'd never really noticed it. Bike's got about 38000km on it, hasn't had the big 36k km service yet. Is this something I should be concerned about? Big repair? Or is just something needing adjusting/tightening/etc?

Considering they run an automatic tensioner I would suggest a new cam chain, should not be that expensive if included in the big service

IF its been thrashed possibly...or there could be a problem with the tensioner or worse just get the mechanic to go over the bike carefully & come up with the fix.
