My 98 zx7r (38000 kms in case it relevant) is always gargling or popping when the rpms are dropping ( coming to intersections or stoping), sounding like some sort of rally car.
It has been like it since i brought it but i've done nothing about it because i think the sound is kinda cool.
It has a carbon fibre "look" exhaust of some unknown brand (i say "look" because it still seems to weigh the same as the stock) and as far as i know it has no engine mods.

The sounds means its running rich right? will it do any harm? am i losing out on a heap of power because of it?
Like i said before i think it sounds tuff so i would mind leaving it.

the aftermarket can is causing it! happens to most bikes when you add an aftermarket exhaust. shouldnt be any loss of power.

mine does it all the time along with my old bike which had carbon fibre akra's on it.

My zx9 had the same thing and yeah it sounded cool until the jet kit went in and the anti poll stuff was removed

does the ZX7r have the kleen system??

My 6 used to do that I quite liked it, it sounded very cool Since the last major service though it has stopped doing it... I kind of miss it a bit.

My bike does that if im really backing off quite quickly, otherwise i'd rarely hear it.... or was that the earplugs?

Funny enough my old bike (gpx750) with a full system used to pop gargle and burp more than my newer bike, perhaps that was because i deliberately ran it a fraction too rich?

But does it do any damage? Would having a small explosion in the pipe, sending gasses down the pipe, do anything? Is this a sign of lack of back pressure and does that NEED to be fixed by a re-jet? I put a Two Brothers pipe on my bike a little while ago and kept meaning to get it re-jetted because it floods when cold (needs to be >60 deg before it wont stall) and backfires when starting (only occasionally) and shoots flames when I hit the limiter. Now I want to keep the burbles and even flames come in handy sometimes. So do I need a re-jet to save from damage, especially before I do a trackday?

the pipes are designed to handle that kind of stuff

most bikes ive ever had have done it. the TLR definately did. it used to backfire and cover people in petrol

ZX7R 99 model I had also did it.

Rons 93 zzr 1100 with a can on it does it and it used to sound sweeeeet

I wouldnt stress overly about it

"Popping" is usually a sign of the bike leaning out, hence jet kits usually fix this problem. (does sound pretty sweet though).

I bought one of those "chips" off ebay that lie to your oxygen sensor, when i had my 03 Z1000. When you rolled on hard up to redline and then shut off quick, it would blow foot long blue flames out the pipe on pump fuel. LOL treat.

This was due to over fuelling, so its hard to say. But if the bike is stock, has carbs, and has an aftermarket pipe, id say she's running a tickle lean.
