Paul,
It doesn't sound like any of the gearbox issues I've ever heard of 9's having (popping out of second being the most common). As I said at the track I can't think of what it might be based on your description (if it was worn plates or springs I'd expect it to be spinning up when you get on the gas not surging when you're off).
Is it possible that the issue is fuel related rather than gearbox/clutch related but you're only noticing it in 3rd gear? Which corner(s) did you notice it most?

What's got me is that it's only in 3rd. Every cause of a surging problem I can think of will affect every gear.

Mate its really hard to tell what its doing without riding it to feel the problem 1st hand.
When you mean a surge, do you mean a rise in rpm with no momentum forward or a surge of movement from the bike?

when i back off in 3rd the bike feels like it freewheels then engine brakes and just continues doing this until you get back on the gas or change gears

,,,,thats the best way of explaining the problem

does kinda sound like fuel, only as its been stated, that would be affected in every gear...
would be something wrong with the actual gear or gear slector??

And worse in lower gears.

Is this accompanied by a god awful crunching or banging noise?

maybe its because of the midrange
too much midrange power
