70's dress up

I have a 40th birthday with a 70's theme to go to this weekend.
I thought I'd paint my hands and face black, put on a black afro wig and wear a white suit. The good wife thinks that it isn't totally appropriate. I'm not convinced. So, I thought I'd see what the general consensus is??
I'm not keen on using boot polish, so would also be interested to hear if anyone has any tips?

You could go in a similar getup and be a little more PC by going as Rolf Harris circa 1970.

I wonder how well that'd go down if I lived in Massachussets??
Besides, it's a little out of the era.

Jason I reckon anything goes at these things. (I guess it depends whose party it is.)
I have some costumes you can borrow- I went to one as the Tin Man (or woman) out of Wizard of Oz, I have gone as Cat Woman (Batman), I've been a devil girl, an angel...... they may need some alteration for you..........

Such wonderful ideas, but I think the size might be an issue.
I thought about wearing my Jedi costume, but wanted to do something different.

Not a bad idea. Got me thinking about other celebs/musos from the 70's with beards - considering I have a 3 week old beard at the moment, I may as well make use of it.
I came up with Cat Stevens and... umm. Well, that's all I came up with.

get some gold chain and a big pendant, voila! One of the Bee Gees a la Saturday Night Fever
(does anyone else remember that Kenny Everett sketch?)
or afro + fake mo + white suit = 70's Porn Star

It's funny you say that. I went out and bought a black wig today (the dark brown wasn't dark enough) and my brother in law has a white suit he wore to a 70's themed party. I learnt a couple of Bee Gee's songs on the guitar today and now I'm all set!

Go as "the shoolboy that's grown a beard" from the song living in the 70's by Skyhooks, everyone will think your Angus Young but that's not so bad either
