Gidday Guys,
I have seen a few of you are up to speed with all things computers and have a couple of questions;

My computer is about 4 yrs old and running Windows XP and last week when opening came up with the following message regarding the CPU What does it mean and can it be fixed or replaced?
The computer is still working ok, but for how long!!!!!!

Also if I do a complete computer backup to an external hard drive, does that save the programs or just the information, and can I then connect the drive to another computer and operate as normal or do I need to load the programs separately.

Given that you've been using it ok up until this happened, the most obvious explanation is that your CMOS battery has died.

Unplug the computer, take the case off and look for the battery on the motherboard - should look like a watch battery (or one of the rectangular packs depending on the type of motherboard). Take the battery out and go and buy a new one.

Put it in and see how you go.

Go into the CMOS settings and change the CPU to Auto-detect - save settings and reboot.

Your IDE cable may need replacing but I'd unplug it at each end first and pluggin it back in then try booting again. If the error still happens replace the cable (this is for testing purposes only because if the CPU is faulty you may wish to replace the system).

Is your computer in a cold room by any chance? If it is try warming the room up before starting the computer - I've seen these errors happen in temps <10 and >40.

There are a number of programs around that allow you to copy our existing hard drive to an external drive then install the external drive into your computer. I did this to upgrade my 40gb to 320gb on my laptop.

Good luck - if it keeps playing up I'd recommend upgrading asap before you lose any important data (but you'd have that backed up in a safe place anyway wouldn't you )

and while you are at it...re-set the BIOS
this requires a push of the button ..or leave the battery out

check yr mobo manual..it will tell you what to do

the other thing I can think of is.....the CPU has come partially out of its socket
heat and/or movement of the PC can do that, make sure the CPU is in properly

its an AMD... any more questions?

Normally there is a link on the motherboard you can use to electrically short out the terminals once the batery has been removed to remove any lingering misbehaving electrons. I have used a paperclip to achieve the same thing.

Don't do it while it's switched on though, the misbehaving electrons can be vicious when provoked .

AMDs of the time were a better thing that what Intel were offering backthen
the Athlon model range is not bad ..just gotta choose the right one

if your not sure oh how to do that (or don't have the motherboard manual) it is also possible to do a soft reset. At that screen push the DEL button to open up BIOS, there should be a reset option there (may not accomplish the same thing but worth a go). Though I did a quick google search and noticecd alot of people commenting on battery/power supply, so I would suggest battery would be a good first step (seeing as they are relatively cheap.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will sit down over the next couple of days and work through them, starting with the battery option.
