ABOUT 50 motorbikes and other stock worth more than $500,000 were damaged in a fire that ripped through a Broadmeadow dealership early this morning.

Police and firefighters are on scene at Kawasaki Newcastle and will attempt to discover the cause of the fire later today.

They are unable to enter the premises at the moment because of safety concerns.

Firefighters said they were called to the scene about 1.45am this morning and found the Lang Road dealership well alight.

The building was badly damaged by the fire, which destroyed an upstairs office and ripped through a mechanical workshop.

It's understood the blaze began in the workshop and spread to other parts of the dealership.

Most of the 50 motorbikes at the dealership were damaged and will likely be written off, staff said.

Reports of flames coming from the Kawasaki Newcastle dealership were made about 1.45am and it took at least 10 crews to extinguish the flames.

There are estimates at least 30 per cent of the Lang Street building has been destroyed and structrual engineers have been called in to assess damage to the rest of the building.

One firefighter was treated at the scene for heat stress.

Newcastle City detectives will investigate the blaze.

They'll probably auction it all off in sydney at pickles etc!

*WARNING STORY*

I once brought a bunch of musical equipment from an auction where a music store IN NEWCASTLE called Musos Corner had burned down!!!!!

BRAGGING: The 2 amps I brought were worth $5000 and $3000, and both just had soot on them, easily cleaned off.

The one that was worth $5k was written in the list with RRP$500 - they'd left the last '0' off!!!!

I got it for $550 and the people around me were all telling me to stop bidding it's not worth that much.

The one worth $3k went for $100 more because of it. ;)

I had my bike booked in for a service on the Monday it all happened.

I called the guys a few days later to check if everything was alright, looks like the fire was caused by an electrical fault upstairs.

They are in the process of trying to recover stock and get a temporary shop set up.

The manager has made a post on their website: http://www.kawasakinewcastle.com.au

I hope they are able to get on their feet soon, I know how horrible and devastating fires can be.

I've never had anything but good dealings with Kawasaki Newcastle and Chris is a really good guy. I hope they get over this as quickly and painlessly as possible and keep their heads above water.

I would have to agree with you Dave. Chris is a genuinley good guy and his shop was better than most Sydney dealerships.
I hope they can rebuild and get back up and running without experiencing too big a loss.
